Merlin, you just reminded me of one phrase that annoys me and which is often heard ...

"at this moment in time" ...

and ...and this one really gets to me!

"These ones...." , "This one" or "these" or "those" but NEVER "These ones" Aaaargh! lol

Rambling Report 18 Jun 2009 14:47

or it might be considered as it was a " German naafi" that Bob was helping the young lady with her English? rather than being arrogant...

anyway, you might all be wrong or right on that one (she says non-arrogantly lol)

"I didn't get my breakfast yet " is entirely different to " I haven't had my breakfast yet..."

'I haven't had my breakfast yet' suggests one hasn't yet eaten it,

"I didn't get my breakfast yet" might imply it is there ( on a plate in kitchen perhaps) but has not yet been collected?

:) xx

Just a few words that annoy me. (1)when some one says "Initiative" instead of Idea( Government Speak.) (2) Absolutely instead of Yes.(3)Lack of resorces, instead of No Money.(4) In Due Course, meaning probably Never. and another thing slightly off this subject, American Baseball Caps.Which I call "Plank Hats" as In As Thick as Two Short Ones. **M**.

Lol Berona,

I am not picking anyone up on their speech, just the so called word GOTTEN which has crept into our language and is growing faster than weeds on a lawn, without anyone noticing. I heard it three times on the news this morning by those who should know better.

Berona

Berona Report 18 Jun 2009 12:49

Yes, Bob. Quite correct, but considering that you 'picked her up' on her speech, you were arrogant too!

Sheesh!

It was about the word GOTTEN.....not a war on words......but now that you mention it

This one......which one?

'This' man was walking down/up the street.....Can you produce the man? Can we see him? NO?......then it should be.....'A' man was walking down/up the street

I remember my teacher telling us that there is no such word as 'got'.

Have you got.....? should be Do you have?

I haven't got.... should be I don't have.

Has it been changed since I went to school? or was my teacher wrong?

Another word that is creeping into the English language is

Noone,

and should be spelt as ( No One ) it is so annoying when people spell it as ( Noone )..............rant over.

Lee ;-)

Ooh, I start twitching if I hear someone say "I seen it" or "I done it". I want to say to the person "Nooo. It's I saw or have seen. It's I did or have done." Seeing as it's probably a bit rude to correct other adults during a conversation, I just smile and nod (and twitch).

Yes but sometimes that is colloquialism Rod.....ie.....Londoners would have said fink and fought but may not have spelled it like that when writing.

Think instead of thing annoys me too.

To all those who have a different opinion...Please do come and have your say......I am not saying I or others are right....only saying what irritates me....doesn't mean I am right or wrong or that this is a thread for those who agree with me....do be polite though :-)))
