My friend Liz is nearing the end. Tomorrow will be her 59th birthday.
I last saw her a week ago Saturday at the hospice altho I rang and sent a message of love. She went home to her Dad's house on Tuesday and there was 24 hr care set up, lots of adjustments so I didn't visit straightaway and I didn't feel well enough to drive on Friday or Saturday. Our mutual friend Val was planning to pick me up and take me there this afternoon, if she wasn't already having too many visitors. Val phoned at midday and the nurses with her have told her Liz is nearing the end, and already has visitors coming.
I just managed to catch her Aussie s.i.l. at the flat before she had to go out, and she tells me Liz is becoming jaundiced, she can't speak or open her eyes, altho she can still hear. She said we could go over later this afternoon if we want to but Val had already said she doesn't think she can face seeing her this way. I know I would cry seeing her like that, but somehow feel I am letting her down in not going. Her s.i.l. did understand what I meant and said she would tell her I had called. I will put the birthday card in the post and hope it arrives tomorrow in time.
I feel guilty for not going to her again but I don't think me sobbing in front of her or her Dad would help any so her s.i.l. is sending her my love when she gets there in a little while. Val had already sent a message earlier from both of us.
Can you all please think of Liz and wish her a gentle passing, to be with her Mum again who died not so many years ago.

prayers for a peaceful and painfree passing to your friend Liz - I do think that if you went to see her Liz you would be strong in her presence. I had to do that once with a dear friend of mine - she died about twelve hours after I saw her. I managed to remain calm in her presence and only broke down as I left so she couldn't hear. Usually they are, like my friend was, drugged into a state of near euphoria, so donlt be afraid to go hun.

Thanks Ann, I am thinking about it still, will see how I feel in a while. It is a 20 mile round trip and I have not felt up to driving these past few days, don't want to risk having an accident, as when I am like this, my concentration levels aren't good on the road. I know Val is saying her goodbyes in her heart as she can't face going, so would have to drive myself.

Oh Liz,I do feel for you.I must say i did go and see my grandad like this and i am glad i did.Was a bit like you and did not know.I went in and i held his hand and started talking to him about anything i could think of about him and me so he knew i was there.He kept squeezing my hand so i knew he could hear and know i was there. Liz, don't beat yourself up about this, you have gone to see her when she was in the hospice and she knows how much you love her. I hope she has a peaceful journey and that all those who love her will know she is free from pain.

Thanks Annie, I know she got pleasure from my visits recently cos her s.i.l. told me and one time, her face literally fell when I said I was off, so I stayed longer. I think now things are a bit different tho. She does have her Dad, her s.i.l. (and another s.i.l.) with her today plus the palliative care people, and her brother will go in after work I expect. Don't know if her son has been this weekend, from London, or if he will be coming for her birthday. She has lots of relatives in the area and friends from her workplace too and I know more than a couple of visitors a day was too much for her last week. It is also very hard for her Dad to have all these people in the house, he is quite a quiet private man. Will see how things are with me and with her, in a little while.

Liz, I firmly believe that ,whether you say your goodbye to her by her bedside or 'from' your home, she will hear you .

If you decide to go I think you will find you will be able to say goodbye without too many tears ( though they will come later) and it may help you more really than it will her...she will know you care anyway...but saying goodbye to her there will help you in letting go maybe...
