Brains and urine were used before that I think should have stayed with it from the sound of things

I find that so intriguing..something that you hear as a term.."mad as hatters"..and that is reason why..because of the mercury..Mmmm...

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 14 May 2008 16:02

When rabbit fur was used to make the hats (i.e. felt), in order to make it mat and to soften the hairs, a solution of Mercury Nitrate ( i think thats what it was) was used to treat the pelts. The hatmakers breathed it in and it affected their brains.

I think - but I stand to be corrected - that the condition known as St Vitus dance also originates from this.

I will google and report back if different

I have never heard of that before..you learn something every day..why put mercury in hats..what is the rationelle?..to make them heavy?..to control temperature...?

tory

tory Report 14 May 2008 15:35

There is such a disease that effects the brain and is caused by mercury but am not sure of the rest :-)
