It will not work in a block of flats above two floors. If it is a tower block they have a stair well which is fitted with fire retardant self closing doors on all floors. This is know as a place of relative safety and enables residents that might live above a floor which is on fire to walk down the stairs and past the fire in safety.

Hayley, thats fine if you can make it, if there are fumes outside your bedroom door you will not make it.

Michael here in the UK for the past 10 years if you have DG you have to a fire window...as an escape route incase of fire we have 3 at the back of the house they can open wide enough to an adult through....

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 8 May 2008 00:41

Fires that occur during the night often prove to be the most deadly when people are asleep in bed. You would be unlikely to survive getting to the front door which is probably locked anyway. The only escape route is via double glazed bedroom windows that will not break no matter how hard you hit them.

One useful escape tip is to buy a device that looks like a small spike encased in plastic and which sticks to the corner of the window. One thump with the fist and the window breaks. A stilleto heel hit hard in the corner of a double glazed window, (not the middle), is a good substitute.

With most two floored houses, don't jump from a window as you will only break your neck which defeats the objective of escaping. Lower yourself from the window cill until your arms are outstretched and just drop. For most people this will be about a six foot drop. Better to possibly break an ankle than a neck.

(this post is for the benefit of Hayley and not a previous postee - just trying to avoid any confusion)
