The coastline walk is something I have wanted to do for several years, I figure it would probably take a good 12 months and I would start and finish probably at Lands End....like the thought of people coming out to wave.

Sue you are right in the half full half empty glass theroy...perhaps I just want too much from life

Oooh Colin is a smuggler chaser!

Now admit it.........if you'd found an ancestor who'd chased smugglers in the South China Seas you'd be getting very interested indeed and think he'd led a very exciting life.

I suppose it all comes down to what we have hoped for and whether we see the glass as half empty or half full.

When I was 18 my best friend and I spent the summer before going off to university working 40 hour weeks as sheet sorters in a laundry for very little money.
It was our job to gather the folded sheets off a trolley, look at the inked on laundry marks and put the sheets into the appropriate pigeon holes for other girls to gather them together and pack.

Sometimes for a bit of light relief we had to go to the folding machine and fetch the sheets!

Working on that machine (it was huge) was a cheery lady who was the machine operator and supervisor. She had begun work in the laundry when she was 15. She left school on the Friday and started work on the Monday morning.
She began as loader into the folding machine and 40 years later (and minus a few bits of finger!) she was happily working as supervisor.

She loved her work because there were people to chat to and the radio played all day.

After that I never felt I could complain about any job being boring! I must admit I hated the sheet sorting but it was character building.

I look forward to hearing about that long walk. Where would you start? We'd all come and wave as you pass if you go near anywhere we live!

sure you have achieved a lot of interesting things in your life colin without having to walk the coastline, what is "boring" to you is probably very interesting to other peo ple

You are correct in some respects, the 10 years in the Navy were certainly the best years of my life so far, 3 years chasing smugglers in the South China seas with the Hong Kong Squadron and plenty of banyans (beach parties) but not what you would call exciting. I thnk a wish list is a good idea and the item at the top is to walk the entire coastline of mainland UK with a dog for a companion and then write a book based on it...then I could say I had achieved something

am sure its not been that boring, all those years in the forces.

alot of the menfolk in my family were in forces and they claim they were the best years of there lifes.

i agree with sue, i have a wish list and when my kids are grown up and left the nest i am off back packing, bit to old for it but better late than never.

There must be branches of your tree you haven't found yet Colin and you have the rest of your life to do something really exciting yourself.

Sounds like it's time to sit down and make a list of things you'd love to do and systematically work your way through them!

When you've got time to come on here and tell us about them we'd love to hear about your adventures!!! LOL

Besides, we need agricultural labourers, fishermen etc. We all have our role to play and it's no less important.

Moonshine....Floozies are exciting, chimney sweeps, Miss chief are a bit different but my lot are all boring farm labourers who all died in old age of boring ailments...at least one uncle tried to liven things up a bit by shoving his head in the oven but thats about as exciting as it gets

I'v got chimney sweeps and cotton weavers in my tree.....oh....and a few monkey's lol

I've got sailors in my tree but I never considered them boring. I thought it was wildly exciting to cross the oceans.
And no way are you boring Colin.....you seem to know so much but make it sound very interesting.
