It is acceptable to do D.I.Y. till?

We have new neighbours who for the past week have been doing D.I.Y till gone 11 at night, which is disturbing my childrens sleep. Im thinking of going round and explaining to them the situation.

What do you think?

That seems selfish to me.... but then todays neighbours see things differently don't they?

You could try and ask them, they may even be nice people who don't realise that they are keeping your children awake.

I would stop at about 8pm if I knew there were young children next door/nearby. Even earlier if their mum asked me to.

Suggest you pop round and have a chat with them. If they're decent people they'll understand.

Jax, I'm not sure, but I think there are by-laws that state the time work must finish, unless they have sought permission from the local authority!!

I'll pop and have a look... but 11 is far too late in a residential area.

i would just go round there and politely explain its keeping your children awake they may not realise how much noise they are actually making

when porky wants to watch emmerdale

but i do think 11 oo is not reasonable

That's classed as anti social behaviour. Not sure if the cut off time is 10 or 11 but they are going beyond that anyway.

When I am doing D.I.Y I make a point of stopping at 7 as no one really wants to listen to that of an evening but wasnt sure if I was just being old fashioned.

I think I will get my OH to go round as he knows the bloke who has moved in as they used to play pool together, so hopefully it can just be a friendly word.

have a quiet word with them and see if they will agree to a cut off time...I did with one of ours and they were very apologetic, another one told me to **** off and continued banging until 1.30am...next morning 8.00am we played the bandof HM Royal Marines nice and loudly...they never made any excessive noise again!

Just found this as a guidline... but it might be useful to look at your own local authority guidelines.

Reasonable times for "DIY"
There are no set times when DIY can be carried out but we recommend that noisier activities (such as those described above) are restricted to the following hours:

Monday to Friday - 9am to 7pm
Saturday - 9am to 5pm
Sunday or Bank Holidays - No noisy work

People expect to be able to enjoy some peace and quiet at the weekends and in the evening. In particular, DIY noise must not interfere with those attempting to sleep at night. This is especially important if young children are living next-door.

Of course, there is nothing to stop you doing the quieter activities that will not affect your neighbours (painting, decorating, etc) well past these hours.

Emergency repairs such as fixing water leaks, electrical faults or missing roof tiles can mean that noise can occur during unsocial hours (outside the reasonable times). However, think very carefully before starting: Is there another way to solve the problem? For example, could the water not simply be turned off and the leak repaired the following day? If you must work during unsocial hours, tell your neighbours why. Hopefully, they will understand.
