Mum and dad are doing a lot of work on their new house... they went next door to say they were sorry if they caused a disturbance and the people said they hadn't heard anything.

I think it's a good thing to warn/check with neighbours especially if it's a semi or terraced house and take your cue from them. If they have small children and your noise can be heard then I think 7pm at the latest. Older or no children then 9pm. If they're not being disturbed at all then at your own discretion.

We are doing extensive refurbishing and building work at the moment and if we are using tools or making any noise we stop at 7pm... If OH is plastering and I'm painting we stop later.

My neighbours were 'gently' putting their stair carpet in at 4 in the morning!! I know, because their stair well is on the wall next to my bedroom.
I just noted the date and time - and the same with any other nocturnal decorating they did - and it was quite a lot!!
I never said anything, but as I work during the week, any DIY I do tends to be in the evenings or at weekends. If they complain, I have my list of times to thrust in their faces!!!
Oh and their son plays the drums - but he did come round to warn me about that!!
