I have revived a paper copy of a birth registration for a Margaret Booth born 25/05/1838 in Cheetham , ( Manchester ), County of Lancaster. CHE/1/42.

A daughter of a Joseph Booth, calico printer of John Street, Cheetham and his wife Alice Thompson, registered at Cheetham on 06/07/1838 .

I cannot find this birth or father on the Family Search Org site nor in the census for 1841 or 1851.

Have I missed it.? :-S

Probably not uncommon surnames but are any of these births a possibility

Name: Mother's Maiden Surname:
BOOTH, CATHARINE THOMPSON
GRO Reference: 1840 J Quarter in MANCHESTER Volume 20 Page 540

BOOTH, GRACE THOMPSON
GRO Reference: 1840 J Quarter in MANCHESTER Volume 20 Page 540

BOOTH, HANNAH THOMPSON
GRO Reference: 1840 M Quarter in MANCHESTER Volume 20 Page 601

Catherine and Grace (probably twins) are shown on lancs bmd as born Cheetham (no mmn showing)
Hannah mmn Thompson in sub district of Saint George

A Grace Booth dies aged 0 1840 Cheetham
a Hannah Booth dies 1840 aged 0 Saint George - both show on lancsbmd site

So probably no help

Familysearch is an American-based site.

If you want English bmd info, use freebmd or the GRO site, or, in this case, Lancsbmd

And please return to the most recent of your threads about the name Booth

I have no doubt this has been posted before, but people don't always want to have to trawl through countless threads to find relevant info

Thank you for this - I did not know how to find previous threads!

As rightly said I am looking for the history of James Booth, who appears in the Slater's Trade Directory and The Manchester Poor Rate Books, -1858-1863 -but does not appears in the Census.for 1851 /1861. (as a Spinner)

It seems that the 1851 census for Manchester was badly damaged in floods and only part of the collection is available, so that might be the problem.

I bought the certificate for the birth in 1838 for a , Margaret Booth Born In Manchester.- as she has stated on census returns she completed. -1861/1871

There are two that come up on the LancBMD - one HUL/8/48 in 1841 whose father is John Booth engineer, And the other 1841 -LRD/9/98 whose mother is named Sandham., and whose father i cannot trace. without buying another certificate.

There is no entry on LancBMD for 1840 for a Margaret Booth.

I am not sure how to find - if possible more on the James Booth. Fine Spinner,, of Ancoats. - B?M?D?.

thank you for your interests. and suggestions.

For information only , I should add that on the FSO site the 1861 census shows George & Margaret MASSEY named as George MASLEY and his wife as MARSHALL MASLEY.

Obviously corrected site of the census owner.. and perhaps other sites.?.

You must take into account that until 1875 there were no penalties for not registering births, so Margaret's may simply not exist

Also, the birth year on a census is an ESTIMATE - based on the person's declared age at that specific date.

Can't see anyone named Booth at Every St in 1861

And the witnesses to Margaret's marriage to George were not apparently related to either of the couple

Margaret -

to find your previous threads, click on "My Threads" under "Tools" at the left side of this page.

Then click on "My Threads - Started" at the top of the resulting list.

I'm confused - you say, "There is no entry on LancBMD for 1840 for a Margaret Booth."

But in the rest of the thread you've been talking about an 1838 birth.
Have I missed something?

Greyghost posted a LancsBMD 1838 birth - although that seems to be the daughter of Joseph, who is not who you're looking for..

On one of the many other threads, OP refers to Every St, Ancoats. This is not correct

The correct info from the marriage cert is Every St, All Souls.
