Hi,
I am trying to find more info on a George Williams, his parents and his children.
All I know for sure is that he was a builder at the time of his son William (my gg grandfather) marriage in 1847 to Matilda Smith.
All the generations I know of were from London/Middlesex so there is a good chance George was a Londoner also.
I have found a couple of possibles, including a George Langridge Williams c1811 md to Sarah Horton in 1826, but not sure how to confirm when I find the correct one, as I have no siblings for William.
Any help or ideas please, Thanks
Gill

Interestingly there is this marriage on the opposite page

Name: George Landgridge Williams Widower occ Builder
Age: Full Age
Estimated birth year: abt 1847
Address: Albany St
Spouse Name: Sophia Smith Spinster
Spouse Age: Full Age
Address: South Bank
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 24 Feb 1847
Parish: St Giles Cripplegate
County: London
Borough: City of London
Father Name: John Williams (deceased) Builder
Spouse Father Name: Samuel Smith (deceased) Gentleman

Witnessess: W Williams & Matilda Smith

So it looks like Sophia Smith and Matilda Smith were sisters

I see on his son's marriage record that his name was George Langridge Williams so this looks like his birth:

Name: George Langridge Williams
Record Type: Baptism
Date: 25 Jul 1824
Father's Name: George Williams
Mother's Name: Judith Williams
Parish: St Mary the Virgin, Monken Hadley
Borough: Barnet
County: Middlesex

Williams George Langridge 79 Islington 1b 205

This looks like the father's death - the age is much more in keeping with a marriage in 1826 - if, as you suggest, he was born c1811, he would have been 15 at the most in 1826

There's also a marriage in 1845 of George Langridge Williams whose father's name is also George Langridge Williams. He married Caroline Smith, daughter of Samuel.

The marriage that MargaretManson found in 1845 George Langridge Williams to Caroline Smith must be connected as the witnesses are
Sophia Smith and Matilda Smith

These are great thanks and so quick.

Thanks Londonbelle for both marriage details, do you know why estimated birth year is same as marriage year by any chance. Confusing to novices like me. I wonder if the John Williams desceased on the 2nd marriage info, was George Williams brother??

Margaret, thanks for the birth info. Couldnt find it anywhere. Certainly looks correct.

Flick, could yours be the father George L Williams death . If as previous he was born in 1824, that would make him 47 at his death.

Please all let me know if I am misunderstanding anything.
Thanks
Gill

I believe that estimated birth year is just a mistake. His age isn't given, just full age, so there's no way of estimating birth year.

Gill - you missed the point, I think, with regard to the death

He would be the one who married SARAH - father to the generation born in the 1820's.

That was why I commented about your estimate of an 1811 birth, which would have meant his marrying at the age of 15 - as I said above.

Hi Flick

On the death for 1871, it says 79 Islington. Does that mean he was 79 at time of death.
Thanks

Hi all,
Any suggestions please. The George (widower) that married Sophia about the same time my William md Matilda in 1847, shows father as John.
Yet the George md to Caroline shows father as George. I had thought maybe he md Sophia after Caroline died, but must be 2 different George Landgridge Williams as fathers names different. Possibly GLW 1792, had 2 sons GLW and John. Any ideas please.

Also. am I correct in reading all this that GLW senior was married to a Judith, not Sarah as I had thought.

So confusing. Could there possibly be 2 George Landgridge families

Looking at the image for William's baptism it looks as if parents are George & Judith

Name: William Williams
Record Type: Baptism
Date: 13 Feb 1842
Born: 25 Aug 1828
Abode: Ealing
Father's Name: George Landgridge Williams occ Builder
Mother's Name: Judith Williams
Parish: St Mary the Virgin, Monken Hadley
Borough: Barnet
County: Middlesex

gillypaul Report 4 May 2010 18:04

Hi,
Sorry but keep going over this info in my mind.
Could the GLW, md to Judith be the parents to my William and GLW 1824. Then could he have been widowed by Judith and then md Sophia, sister to both his sons wives.
Seems far fetched, but he was a widower when md Sophia, is 10 yrs oldr than her, has 3 children under 3 in the 1851 census, when he is 49.
That would also fit with the marriage record to Sophia with his father being John, where William and GLWjnr father shows as GLW.
There is a 10yr descrepency with the cenus age and death age, but these can be wrong as we know.
Am I just grasping at straws??

If the 1851 census is correct then this could be George in the 1861 census.... so it looks as if Sophia has died and George has married Ann
