Find Ancestors

I Have looked in the free bmds for an ancester of mine and have come up with a couple of possibles,the problem is one is in the district of Camberwell and the other is in the district of Wandsworth, my ancestor was born in Fulham and I was hopeing that someone might know if Fulham was in either of those districts,or if not which district(s) it would come under

Wandsworth

Fulham became a registration district in its own right in June 1875

Hi Chris,

Camberwell is due south of the old London Bridge. Wandsworth is also south of the river, further west. Fulham is due north of Wandsworth, on the north isde of the river. There are a couple of bridges linking Fulham and Wandsworth now, but I'm not sure about the history of bridges over the Thames.

If they were born in Fulham then Camberwell and Wandsworth don't fit.

Fulham had it's own district after 1875.

When was this? Can you give details?

OK, it looks like there would have been a usable bridge for most of the period since 1837 - tolls abolished in mid-19th century:

"MORE BRIDGES AT LAST ... 1729 - 1900
In 1729, London's second Thames bridge opened to traffic
— a wooden bridge that crossed from Putney to Fulham. It is the predecessor of the Putney Bridge we have today.
And so the long period of river-crossing dominance by Old London Bridge came to an end. The growth and prosperity of the city and key support from the political sphere helped this come about.
Old Putney Bridge was followed by bridges at Westminster (1750), Blackfriars (1769) and Battersea (1772). As can be seen from the list at left, the turn of the century brought an acceleration in bridge building, starting with London's first cast iron bridge Old Vauxhall Bridge (1816).
Many of the bridges were privately funded and the charging of tolls was used to pay back investors. With the coming of the railways, the bridge-building trend continued and the arrival of increasing numbers of passengers put pressure on the non-tolled bridges they headed for. In the middle of the 19th century, the charging of tolls was abolished. "

The one I am looking for is Robert (second name maybe William not sure tho) Tanner
b1892 Fulham parents Frederick&Eliza Tanner.have found him on censuses but can find no birth record

The family is in Fulham district in 1891 and 1901.

The ages are off a bit for the siblings in 1901. Frank and Bertie(Herbert) are actually twins and Ellen is listed as 4 weeks in 1891. I don't see her birth either.

i have a copy of 1891 census where Ellen is 4 wks,but I'm a bit confused about your'e theory about Frank& Bertie being twin i think someone originally put Berties age as being the same as Franks them changed it to the right age of 2 is it possible for you to let me see the copy you have seen for the family in 1891

This could be possibly where Rose has come to the conclusion that Frank & Bert are twins, they are both on same page in same quarter, to confuse the matters there is also a Herbert Tanner born in 1899 in Fulham. Possibly they were twins and Herbert died and they had another boy called Herbert in 1899 registered in Fulham.

I think the one Rose has found you is the right one. You could always order that cert and ask for reference checking with say the fathers name. That way it would only be £3 if it's the wrong one. I have been looking for a cousin of mine and have bought five wrong certs so far, so now going to ask for reference checking, so won't cost me as much.

I've changed my mind about the birth for Charles Robert P. There are two Charles Tanners born in Hammersmith on the 1901 census and only 2 Charles Tanner births on FreeBMD.
