I have picked up my grandparents marriage certificate and am very confused, would be grateful if someone could please help me out. My grandfather John Bradley married Lily Bradley, formally known as Lily Hinchcliffe in 1955. Lily was actually married previously but was it to a Bradley or a Hinchcliffe. Her fathers name was John Patrick Kelly but was deceased at the time of marriage. Did her father die young and was she adopted by a Hinchcliffe or was her maiden name actually Kelly???
Any help very much appreciated.

Kind regards

Danielle

Can you help us to help you by typing in exactly what it says on the certificate, including the printed headings; just the relevant bits.

The birth cert of whichever of your parents was Lily's child will show her maiden name.........or what she said was her maiden name.

Sounds like she was born Kelly, married Mr Hinchcliffe, then married Mr Bradley.

John Bradley married Lily Hinchcliffe or also know as Bradley, GRO..........,,,perhaps she used her husbands name of Bradley prior to the marriage,,,?

you may have to back track for a ? Hinchcliffe marriage to Lily Kelly

Lily and John were married on the 1st of October 1955. Names and Surnames are John Humphrey Bradley and Lily Bradley formally known as Lily Hinchcliffe. Johns age is 28 and Lilys age is 33. John was a bachelor and Lilys previous marriage dissolved. Johns fathers name was Jack/John Bradley and Lilys fathers name was John Patrick Kelly but he was down as deceased on marriage certificate. If you need any other information then please let me know. Husband is looking for my fathers birth certificate.

My father was actually born out of wedlock in February 1953. On the birth certificate under the heading of name, surname and maiden name of mother all it says is Lily Bradley (home duties), there is no mention of any previous surnames.

I would at a guess..Lily used the Bradley surname on the birth cert,,,,,,,although she wasntt married to John Bradley at the time,,,,,,,,,,,,,and she couldnt put any other names as she looks like she was still a married woman ,,,and awaiting divorce.??

if deceased,,does Lilys age on death,,corespond with that on her marriage ,??

You say that the cert says Lily was "formally known as Lily Hinchcliffe". Can you have another look and confirm that it says formally and not formerly. It makes all the difference. If formally then Hinchcliffe is her real name and Bradley is an alias. If formerly then she has changed her name from Hinchcliffe to Bradley probably by marriage.

JMW Report 16 Jan 2008 13:57

An alias is shown on a certificate as 'otherwise', not formally.
The definition of a maiden name, as this is central to this is ' the name in which a woman contracted her first or only marriage', so she could well have been using a different name at her first marriage if her name had been changed in some way prior to the event.
You are also very reliant on what the informant told the registrar at the time. There is no law in this country which requires someone to use the name they were originally registered with.

It is down as Formally.......

Do you know when she died as that might help find her.

I have found the death of John Humphrey Bradley 1998 Leeds born 1 Oct 1926. Can't find one for Lily thought.

I have had a quick look at 1921 and 1922 births and there are a few Lily Kellys so very hard to find.

The only John Patrick marriage I can find is 1891 in Yorks is in Bradford.

Not a lot of help but don't know where else to look.

The only information i have is that Lily died when my father was very young. He was born in 1953 so i presume it was before 1960. I have never met my father and am in the process of trying to find him but until i do i'm afraid i don't know anything......

Can not find a death for Lily Bradley in 1950/60s so now not sure what happened to her. Would anyone be able to check to see if Lily/Lilian Kelly married a Hinchcliffe between 1938 and 1955.

Kind regards

I've managed to find my father and he's told me that his mums mum was called Oddy and he has 2 half brothers, I've traced these but am stilll none the wiser. It may be possible that Lilys mother and father never married but surely i'd find a birth with mmn Oddy or could Lilys father have died when she was young and her mother marry an oddy with lily taking the name?
