I Know this is old post but its my family too and the lady in question (Sarah Bailey ) was infact a Bailey originally (Maiden name ) looks to me that she changed her name back after husbands death to Bailey along with her sons but elder son John Steptoe 1870 stayed a steptoe ??? |

possibly! why do families have to be so confusing?!!!! Makes life hard for us that are trying to find out! The other side is also an issue! Have just emailed Huntley and Palmers biscuit company because rumour has it my grandad's nan was heiress to their fortune!! |

In those days family took on orphaned siblings cousins etc as well. My Nan was actually bought up by her Gran as one of her children along with her aunts and uncles and she always thought her oldest 'sister' was just that-actually she was her MUM she didn't get told until she was 18 and then learned about the truth! Even then she always called her 'Ev' not Mum. |

speaking to my nan though, she says that the bailey brothers were her nan's brothers. I just assumed they didnt have 'brothers in law' then! The only reason for it is what i originally said. That the older Jane's mother Sarah was widowed and then married again. The bailey brothers are all younger than Jane and her siblings. |
