Ok, I'm trying to find a number of the Bailey family who were born in the late 1800s in Limehouse area. They are related to my mothers side of the famiy. My great nan's nan was widowed at 25 and seems to have remarried someone called Bailey. In the 1901 census William, Tom, Henry and George Bailey are all living with my great nan's mum (why i don't know) and I can't seem to find them earlier on. I can only presume my great nan's grandmother remarried rather than taking on someone elses children. Her name was Jane Steptoe and was born in 1846. She already had 3 children, Emily, Jane and John.

Any one got any ideas?

Is this them!?

If so it looks lIke Jane Wilson and Edward Wilson are husband and wife and have 4 Wilson Children. All the Bailey childern/youngadults are brothers of Edward (Brothers of Head of the house)
-so not anyhting to do with jane-Emily wilson is down as a niece (So that would be niece of Edward) Looks like Edward and the other 'brother' were half brothers and the little Emily must have a been a daughter of an unmarried sister of Edward or a brothers child! what a mess!

speaking to my nan though, she says that the bailey brothers were her nan's brothers. I just assumed they didnt have 'brothers in law' then! The only reason for it is what i originally said. That the older Jane's mother Sarah was widowed and then married again. The bailey brothers are all younger than Jane and her siblings.
See why i'm so confused?!!! thanks for your help!

Why do you think she's the Wilson/Bailey one?

Emma-Jayne

Emma-Jayne Report 30 Oct 2007 20:28

Ok,

My nan is Mary Elizabeth Cooper (nee McCready). Born 1922.
Her mum is Jane (known as Elizabeth!) McCready (nee Wilson) born 1892. (she's the young Jane in the 1901 census).
Her mum is Jane Wilson (nee Steptoe) born 1868
Her mum is Sarah Steptoe (no idea of maiden name) born in 1846. It appears her first husband is called John. He dies somewhere between 1861 and 1871 census aged around 25.

Hope that helps! Thanks for everything!

In those days family took on orphaned siblings cousins etc as well. My Nan was actually bought up by her Gran as one of her children along with her aunts and uncles and she always thought her oldest 'sister' was just that-actually she was her MUM she didn't get told until she was 18 and then learned about the truth! Even then she always called her 'Ev' not Mum.

It maybe they wer brought up along side your family like siblings and the ins and outs were never discussed so they would have been like brothers to them-they were lucky they had your half of the family to take care of them

Emma-Jayne

Emma-Jayne Report 30 Oct 2007 20:34

possibly! why do families have to be so confusing?!!!! Makes life hard for us that are trying to find out! The other side is also an issue! Have just emailed Huntley and Palmers biscuit company because rumour has it my grandad's nan was heiress to their fortune!!
