Blimey on the 1881 it looks like Bertha S Dormer was only about 12/13 when she had Thomas? Is that what u found?

I've changed my mind.........Elizabeth comes into the equation.........she'd have been 15/16.

Of course, it could be that Sarah was his mother, but didn't actually say so to the enumerator............the wee boy was a bit young to be separated from his mother!

Yes that what i was thinking that sarah did fib.... she might of been embarrassed that she was an unmarried mom.

Right so it looks like Thomas Dormer changed his surname to Hampton when his mom married??

It does look like u may have got the correct information as its in Solihull and its in the same area where he married Rose Johnson


Am wondering as on my nan and grandad marriage cert it still says Thomas Dormer not Hampton would this be the case?

No, he didn't change his surname.........he married as Dormer.

It's just that he was listed as a son of the head of the household and the assumption was that his surname was the same.

While looking through this thread and records on Ancestry, I cannot find the parents John and Mary Dormer together after 1871 and also for their daughter Elizabeth.
