Hi I am going to Stoke on Trent Archives next thursday (2 June). If anyone needs anything looking up in the parish records, please let me know. Now I have found my way around and know where things are, I dont mind doing lookups! I have only booked the fiche reader for 2 hours so first come first served - can also look in trade directories or on GRO indexes. Will definately be going on a regular basis (every week or so) so if anyone wants a lookup, let me know - If I can't help this time, I can try and do it next time. Please give as much info as possible, whilst I am prepared to do lookups, I'm not prepared to lookup 'born somewhere in Stoke on Trent' or similar - give me the name of the church please! Sam x |

Hi Sam While you're there, could you ask who has the parish registers for Barton under Needwood? If they have them at Stoke, I'll ask you for a lookup at a later date! Thanks Lou |

I had a look around when I went last week - I know they don't have the fiche for anywhere other than the local area but they had lots of parish records in book form for the West Midlands area (and other parts of Staffs). Let me know who you are looking for just in case, I'm almost sure they had the ones you need - also books are easier on the eye and I don't need to book time on the fiche reader or use the time I've already booked! Hi Sam, If it is not too much trouble, would you have a look for the baptism of my Martha Mason. She was born 1869/70 in the Handley area of Stoke. Father was Amos Mason and i believe the mother was called Harriet. Thank You Claire x |

Hiya Sam, Derbyshire Dancer picked up on the message that i left and sent me a message, so i thought i'd copy on here so you've got all of the same info. here goes..... 1st message to Dancer from me Hi Derbyshire, The girls name is Olive Deaville, but it's a bit of a weird one is this! I have her marriage cert which states her age (but i know not to take it as gospel!!!) and i've got her on the 1891 census aged 11, but no sign of her on the 81. Her father is down on the 81 living with his father! As stated i've got her on the 91 and on the 1901, but her mother NEVER appears with her husband or the 3 kids that they had together. I have a 3rd cousin who is convinced that her mother's name is Mary Ellen Bailey, so i went away to see if i could find a marriage between these 2 names, and hey presto....Charles Deaville and Mary Ellen Bailey got married in 1880 (according to free BMD), but i can't afford the cert at the mo. Confused? you will be coz it goes on..... Was looking thru the family bible the other day (has been passed down since Olive) and i found a funeral card for Ellen Deaville just after 1901, but she died and was burried in Stockport? Have found her on the census with a daughter called Lilian. Could this be Olive's Mother and Sister? Olive went on to have 11 children (my nan being the 2nd youngest). She named her 2 eldest daughters Ellen and Lillian......coincidence????? so, if i can find Olive's baptism and confirm her mothers name, it may confirm all of this for me Sorry it's such a long message, but i didn't want to leave anything out!!! Claire x 2nd message to Dancer Hi Dancer, Forgot to mention in the other message that it's down in the bible that she was born in 1880 as well. Charles' other kids were: Charles Edward b 1886 Joseph b1883 He then also had another child (with the servant that he had) called Harold Pointon (is on the 1901 census with them) who was born 1895. Thanks for having a look for me cheers chuck Message back from Dancer Hi Claire ! yep ... a tangled web !! I have found the Charles with his dad Jospeh on the 1881 so I see what your saying. Maybe ... Mum was quite poorly and couldn't look after the baby ... I did find an Olive born 1880 as a nurse child ... but her surname is down as Derral ... and she is with the Plant family in Leek. Not sure if this info helps ! ... but it would help Sam if you let her know that Olive Deaville was registered in JUNE 1880 in Leek. Chances are that Olive was never baptised IF she never lived with Mum or Dad ... ? ... Good Luck with the records Claire ! Hope Sam is able to find something for you. Dancer x Sorry it's soooooo long Sam, but thought some of it may help ya c x |

Hi Sam, I don't know if you will be able to help me or not, I am looking for a Minnie Hanner LEES - 1910 - Dec - Stoke on Trent - 6b-283. I need to know if her father was called James Hanner LEES. I can only find 2 Minnie LEES in the 1837, this one and one in Rotherham. I got her fathers name from her marriage certificate. If you cannot help I understand, as I don't have a clue which church it could be. Many thanks. Pat |

Hi Pat I'm very sorry, there are LOADS of churches in Stoke on Trent, any one of which could be the one Minnie was baptised at. Can you narrow it down any further? Where did she get married? Where about was her father living in 1901? If you could narrow it down to at least a town/village it might help, otherwise I'm afraid it's an impossible task, I would be there all day! Sam x |

Hi folks Have been to the Archives, not found an awful lot so here goes: Cat BaLou, They have Barton under Needwood registers in book format but they only go up to 1812. The later ones on fiche are at Stafford Records Office apparently. Claire, Could see no Mason's at all at either of the two large churches in Hanley. Do you know where about in Hanley they were from? This could narrow it down so I could look at the smaller non-conformist church records. Little Ray of Sunshine, You said you had checked St Luke's so I checked St Edward's but still could find no record for Olive Deaville, sorry. It looks like Dancer is right and she was never baptised (like most of my family it appears!) Colette, Burial records for Stone are held at Staffordshire Records Office in Stafford so couldn't look, sorry. Didn't get chance to look at the directories, will have a look next week. Diane, No Jane Cartlidge between 1838-1841 at St Mark's in Shelton. (No Cartlidges at all). Nichola, Only had the fiche reader booked and the burial registers are on CD-ROM. Will have a look next time I book a PC if that's ok. Sam x |

Hi Sam Thanks for looking. I had a feeling they were going to be held at Stafford so will have to hope someone is going in the future I contacted them a few weeks ago about paying for a search but they've suspended the service for the foreseeable future due to staff shortages! Lou |
