I have just found out that they have deducted 5 units, so you only get 50 units for £5 instead of 55. I will not be using the site again if it is going to do that. Anyone else think it is wrong? |

Hi Isobel I think I will try that in future, and hopefully it will let me search by firstname and district as I want to see if an ancestors siblings birth has been mistranscribed. Ben |

S&N Genealogy Supplies The largest UK genealogy publisher and retailer, with over a decade of experience in serving the needs of computer-based family historians. www.BMDindex.co.uk BMDindex.co.uk has the complete range of Birth, Marriage and Death records from 1837 onwards as published by the GRO - that's 167 years of data, or an amazing 250 million events! No other site has the range of facilities and with access from only £5 the prices can't be beaten I think they are all the same firm as S&N who sell census data cds and other genealogy supplies |

I have just emailed 1837online asking them to let me know if they have reduced the number of units, before I purchase any more. Will let you know if I get a reply. I'll be disappointed if they have as I use the site quite a lot, and I've told them so. Kath. x |

Susan, It must have been a very long limited period, as I have been buying units for ages and have always got more than what they are offering now. Kath. x |

Jean I had a problem with my firewall too when I first went on 1837. I think you have to add the site as a trusted site within your Norton settings. If you go to the 1837 site and click on help (a small text link at the bottom of the page) there is a section there about firewall problems. Good luck Kate :) PS: Have just had a quick look at Norton and I think this may be what you need to do: Open Norton Click on Parental Control and then on Configure Click on Sites Select Specify Blocked Sites if it isn’t already selected. Click on the Exceptions button. Click on Add Add the 1837 web address into the box. Click OK and close Norton. Now try to view images again. Hope that works – if not it might be worth emailing 1837. |

yes its wrong, but i blame the records office for selling this info to companys so they can sell it us, we already pay for the upkeep etc of these documents through our taxes. i dont see why we shouldnt be able to access the indexes for free. dont mind paying for certificates, |

Jennifer, if you don't want to pay for the info, then why not go to your nearest large library/the FRC and look at it for free? Also, those big greedy companies have been happy to let FreeBMD put the index online for free. You don't HAVE to pay to find the information; what you pay for is the convenience and easy access. |

I am with you Twinkle 1837 have saved me mega bucks! if I had to travel to find the info it wouldnt get done as fast or as easy. There are lots of overheads to running a buisness which is why the GRO allows others to give us the info sandie |

Just a thought - but anyone having problems viewing images from 1837 - HAVE you downloaded the DJViewer from the site ? ... you can't view the images without it I'm afraid. If you have, then you need to configure Norton. Good Luck - I went through it all when I first joined - its annoying, but takes 5 mins to sort out and then everything is fine. Dancer x |

Got a reply from 1837online and this is what they say your money buys at the moment:- £5 for 55 units @ 10 pence valid 45 days · £10 for 122 units @ 9 pence valid 60 days · £15 for 194 units @ 8.5 pence valid 90 days · £25 for 345 units @ 8 pence valid 120 days · £60 for 891 units @ 7.5 pence valid 365 days £120 for 2640 units @ 5 pence valid 365 days This is what I've always got, so I don't now think the amount of units has been altered. I am not sure whether 1837 has stopped giving the extra credits or not, but you may be able to get a promotional code from somewhere to get extra credits. As for S & N / The Genealogist / BMD Index, they are now offering various 'all-inclusive subscriptions' which it may be worth looking at, but I don't think 'all-inclusive' means 'as many lookups as you want'; I think it includes a certain number of BMD credits and you have to pay extra for more. And some of the options have a minimum subscription period of 12 months although you pay monthly. It does include various census indexes, including 'complete London 1851'. (Funny, because I put my name down to index part of that and haven't finished it yet! Does that mean I have been wasting my time and they never told me?!) The last time I looked at their BMD index, it was indexed by first and last name on page the same as 1837, and I think this is probably still true despite all their claims that it is 'fully indexed by surname, first name and middle initial', but I would love to know if I am right or if it is indexed in the same way as FreeBMD and as Family Rellies for 1866-1920, i.e. on each name that is there. If it is I would certainly consider subscribing again. I would also add that when I tried it out a while ago, the images took much longer to load than on 1837 online, and I don't know if this is still the case. Does anybody have more recent experience of the site? Kate. |

So with S&N, you pay £5 and in the space of those 3 months you can search all the pages you want? Are they 'indexed' like 1837, they'll tell you where the name should be, whether or not it is there, or like FamilyRelatives which comes up with exact matches? Chloe |

The price was always going to be 50 for £5 but they threw in the extra ten percent as initially some of the images weren't too good. To be honest, the extra units have been on offer for far longer than I expected. Still far cheaper than travelling to London! |

Linda has confirmed on a thread on the Tips Board that The Genealogist's BMD Index search is like 1837's in that it will give you a page or pages which may or may not contain the entry you are searching for, rather than being indexed down to the level of each entry. Kate. |
