Find Ancestors

Hi I am looking for a George Frederick Thompson, He died in sheffield about 1926. I cannot find anything relating to him. He married a Mary Alice Jarvis. Aparently he was left in a basket on a doorstep so I am not sure I will find anything as I realise that his new parents may have given him his surname. Could anyone give me any ideas Thanks Zoe

I've seen in recent years, of people who have themselves been left on doorsteps, in phone boxes, etc .... and they have not been able to find out who they actually are or where they were from. Thats during the last 20 - 70 years ...... so I wouldn't hold out much hope for more than 100 years ago babe .... if this person was left on a doorstep. :-( Elaine ;-)

His marriage cert would give his age, so you could see if there were reports about him being found in the local paper at that time. How reliable is the story about him being found on a door step? nell

Hi Helen & Derbyshire Dancer, I don't hold much hope no and the info was from his son. His father told him he was found on a doorstep. I wasn't sure if there was anyway I could trace back because surely he would have had to have a birth cert to be married, which he was. Thanks Zoe

Hi zoe, are you sure this was not just a polite way in telling his son that ' Daddy' didnt know of his bio father.... meaning he was a bathbun... or bar-stuard... if you get my drift !!! In that case he might have his mothers maiden name on his birth cert. K x

When/where did he marry Mary Alice Jarvis - do you have marriage cert already?

Hi Thanks for the replies, No I don't think he was a basket but hey who knows ? He married Mary Alice Jarvis in Sheffield I think around 1915-1920. I can't find a George Frederick Thompson on any of the Census living in Sheffield though. Its a strange thing this family research I will say that. Got me anyway, but it doesn't take much. HI, I agree with Christine, You need to obtain the marriage certificate. If you search 1837 online you should find the reference for it. It costs a minimum of £5 for credits. If you then order the certificate (£7), That will have his age and there is a space for fathers name, You need to know what it written there. If he was raised by an adoptive father, maybe his name will be on there? Alternativley if you can locate his death, his age at death will be written in the reference, therefore you will not need to order the certificate. You then have more of a chance finding him in 1901 if you have his age, and hopefully fathers name. Pat

Hi Pat thanks for replying, I know he died around 1928 but can't find his death or marriage any where. I have his son's marriage cert which states his name and deceased, so I know he was alive at some point but not sure where to find him. Thanks again Zoe

Hi Guys, Right the marriage cert for George Frederick Thompson to Mary alice Jarvis arrived today it says he got married in Sheffield on 16/10/1915. It says he was 32 when he got married so I reckon he was born abt 1883, still cant find the b***** man. This man is haunting me, I go to sleep thinking about it and wake up the same. His father was called John Thompson. Any advice would be most appreciated. Thanks Zoe

His dad was not alive when he got married in 1915. Her dad was a warehouse man. Many thanks Zoe

No sign of his dad.

No sign of a dad. Florence, the mother is living with one son, John in her parents home. The two other boys, George and Frederick are living with aunts. But all in the same town. The names and dates fit well for the children of a man called John Thompson and there is a penchant for George and Frederick! If it were me, I would take the chance in looking for a marriage in about 1880 between Florence A Downes and a John Thompson. I was hoping to find the father and Florence on the 1881 but unfortunately she is a visitor on that and again, no husband.

Better not get carried away with this couple, they may not be connected at all - seems a big space before the first kiddie for then? Wonder if he was in army or something.

Hi there, Sorry been away for a few days. Right I have looked for the John & Florence and cant find anyone in th 1901 census, exept a John and also Mary e Thompson as inmates maybe they killed Florence only joking ! I have ordered a birth cert for George Frederick born 1883 Sheffield hopefully this is the right one. Thanks so much for your help. Also the Henry Jarvis I don't think is the right one as Mary Alice was only born abt 1893. Many thanks Zoe
