I have a relative born Mary Jane Burton.................................................... She married Charles Matthews under that name, and for the birth of first child she was Mary Jane, by the next to birth to be registered she was Jane matthews (the name my nan knew her by)................................... Her husband Charles died in 1894, and she was soon with another man and 2 more daughters with him. When (if) she married this man would she of had to use her married name on the cert? My nan only knew possible surname of this man as Rixon (dont know spelling as iots only hearsay) .................................................................She then had 3 sons by 2nd 'husbands' brother................so would she be Rixon marrying Rixon?........................................................the certs Ive got for first family & her siblings are Paddington & Kensington |

Did she reg the second childs birth? My paternal gran was Emma Anne but her second hubby called her Annie & he reg their daughter & put mums name as Annie because thats waht HE called her . When she married again the cert should say her married name formerly her maiden name. ie if she was mrs smith nee jones then she would marry as Smith formerly jones Shirley |

Well Im not sure but I would think IF she filled in the details correctly each birth would have her married name at the time of each birth with her previous name/s in brackets saying formally.......(name)........Hope that makes sense. Suzanne |

Just as a by word....I often see marriages where the surnames are the same and I dont think it was that uncommon to marry a brother if the husband died. Suzanne |

Not sure if that works for births, but know if you marry for the third time the cert only states you surname at marriage & maiden name. Th e first marriage seems to get lost. This happened with my maternal gran who married three times. THe child she had by the third hubby only states her married name & maiden name .no ref to any former marriages on the birth cert Shirley |

Thanks for all that input. I just wish I could be more certain of the name Rixon. It came from my great aunt and nan, who were told the stories by their mother, who was Mary Janes first child. I spent a long time looking for Mary Janes mother who they told me was called Kate McCarthy, and I found out to be Catherine McKenna. So memory & pronunciation may of distorted Rixon over the past 100 years! |

What are the names of her other children maybe they could be found in the 1901 census and then you maybe able to find out the mothers new name if she has one - just an idea someone has probably tried this - if not worth a try. Zoe |

Zoe ~thanks for your offer.I have tried to find her in both 1891 & 1901-unsucessfully. She was born 23/7/1871 in Jersey. In 1891 she was married to Charlews Matthews. With daughter Frances Jane Matthews b 11/6/1888 Paddington. The next daughter was Florence Elizabeth b 21/10/1889 Kensington. Florence was in St. Marys hospital for the 1891 census, but I have never found a trace of the other 3 family members By 1901 Charles was dead and this 3 girls were in an industrial school which I have traced. But I would so like to find Mary Jane & her new family- as she deserted the children from this marriage too. All I know is Bessie & Lily, and they were sent to Canada...........before Mary Jane moved onto 'husband' no.3 (no. 2's brother) and had 3 boys with him William, Thomas & Jack Have emailled you as well Zoe Lorna |

Hi Lorna Try getting creative with the spelling of Rixon. I have had trouble in the past and have found Cox spelt Coy when transcribed from the Census records and Fenwick spelt Ferencak. regards Anne-Marie |
