Have just googled for Warrior Hulk / convict ship etc and found this web page http://www(.)learningcurve(.)gov(.)uk/victorianbritain/lawless/source5t.htm it has a short list of prisoners on the Warrior in 1849 - ....... The source is a list of the prisoners who were aboard HMS Warrior in December 1849. HMS Warrior was one of the convict hulk ships used to keep prisoners before they were transported. This source is an extract taken from a list that shows the prisoners that were aboard HMS Warrior in December 1849. Now I don´t know whether they were still there in 1851 waiting to be transported or not but there is a reference quoted .... Catalogue ref: HO 8/102 HO presumably refers to Home Office - so I wonder if somewhere there is a full list of names of those awaiting transportation in 1851 Now I don´t know where you would find such a document - possibly National Archives or A2A - maybe someone on here may be able to help you with that one. Do hope you manage to solve it somehow!

Am still here !! Sadly nothing to report. I have downloaded 48 pages of census images from the Hulk and checked any names against miners or colliers - nothing I am afraid. There are about 20 page (approx 400 names) which have only been transcribed with initials for first name and surname - have looked at these as best as I can but cannot see any possibilities. Do you know how accurate the place of birth is - have you taken it from the trial reports? Do the places of birth for the other fellow convicts we have found match up to the trial reports? It seems such a shame as I am sure we are so close to finding him.

Am going through the census images to see if I can find a miner whose name might bave been recorded with only is initials !!! Will get back to you in a mo!

Lizloojay - well spotted - thanks for the link Elaine - gosh that is an enormous number of convicts on board, I had no idea they had that many. Is there anyone on board that you even have just a small hunch about?

Elaine Report 18 Jan 2006 10:18

There appears to be about 800 convicts on board this ship. If you just do a blank search of the ship without putting in any names there are a number of convicts whose names come up just with initials, for example there are about 15 convicts who are names J.H. - none born in Bradford c1827 Have done a blank search for anyone born 1827 Bradford +/- 5 years - only ones that come up are W Keane abt 1830 Bradford, Yorkshire, England Convict Woolwich Kent T L abt 1832 Bradford, Wiltshire, England Convict Woolwich Kent S Stratton abt 1825 Bradford, Wiltshire, England Convict Woolwich Kent R White abt 1832 Bradford, Yorkshire, England Convict Woolwich Kent

Alice - convicts/prisoners are often listed only with initial, rather than full name - so you need to look under surname only

K

K Report 18 Jan 2006 09:59

Okay I've just looked at the newspaper account of the robbery at the time and there is another chap involved - Richard West (22 in 1848) Could he have been on the convict hulk as well? You both have a captive audience here!
