Hi, I have recently bought this book and willing to check details for anyone who posts. Please be patient as may take time to reply but aim to reply to requests within 48 hours, failing that send me a message. Book is very helpful. Lists criminals names, crimes, places and dates of executions. Gives description of the court proceedings, places of execution and also details on the actual executioners. Kathryn

Hi Sue, Sorry (although don't know whether it is a good thing or bad thing, lol) but you have no culprits of those surnames according to the alphabetical list of culprits at back of book. Kathryn

Sorry Sue, forgot to check the Executioners section. A John Milne who was married to a Christian Waters or Milne. 'John Milne - Aberdeen Convicted in April 1806 of stealing beehives at Corse, Milne accepted the post of hangman in lieu of seven years transportation, on a salary of £7 10s per half year . . . . and remained in office until his death in 1818-19 when he was earning £19 per annum.' A further snippet shows Christian was still alive in October 1831. Any match? Kathryn

Hello Kathryn Thankyou for the offer. Can you tell me if there is anything for a Daniel Bruce McCallum born c1805 - he was convicted of theft and sentenced to death in abt 1829 in Glasgow. Also if possible anything on ROSS's of Scourie Sutherland? Much thanks Danielle

Hi Danielle No mention of a Daniel Bruce McCallum nor even any McCallum's either, may be one the author missed. I've heard stories of my own ancestors having been executed but no mention in book but you know how stories get elaborated on over the years. For Ross, there are 3 listed. Normand Ross, Edinburgh, Murder, 10/01/1752 - Murder of Margaret Home, known as Lady Billy as widow of Ninian Home of Billy. Declaration gives his birth as Inverness on 16/04/1728, where after 8 year education he served oversees in army and as a Gentleman's Servant. - There is more but I am reluctant to put it up as don't want to be copying loads from the book, if it is a match contact me by sending me a message and I will elaborate moreas I have just summarised the man area. Simon Ross, Glasgow, Theft by Housebreaking, 04/11/1818 - '19 year old Simon Ross had been condemned for theft by housebreaking at Rutherglen with three accomplices - the youngest aged 14.' Walter Ross, Edinburgh, Theft, 19/04/1786 - 'A flax dresser from Edinburgh, Ross was hanged at the Luckenbooths for 3 acts of theft, which included picking a wallet containing £25 from the pocket of the Lord Provost of Glasgow.' Kathryn Report 31 Jan 2006 21:45

Hi Kath I don't think so lol. I paid £15 for the book as the McMurdo's were always getting a bad press but none have been executed unless prior to 1750. Also heard a story that some of the New family in Scotland had been executed after moving to Scotland from Ireland for murdering a soldier as part of an early IRA but again no mention of them either. May as well let the book be of some use to others although it definately makes interesting reading. Kathryn
