Find Ancestors

I cannot find my grandmothers family in the 1861 census. They are in the 71/81/91and 1901census but must have been taken by Aliens during the 61 census. The family name is KIESLING August (head) b 1823 Germany Caroline (wife) b 1831 Germany John (son) b 1854 Manchester August (son) b 1855 Manchester Emma (daur) b 1857 Manchester Johanna (daur) b 1860 Manchester Helena and Eda (daurs) b 1862 Manchester (Twins I suspect) Obviously the twins won't show up but the other six members should be there. Can any of you super sloothes find them please ??????? Norm from Oz

Hi Norman I have a family living in the Bradford area of Manchester 1861. They do not appear on the census on Ancestry but when I went to check at the library in Manchester I found them straight away. I maybe going to the library in the next few days can you give me an address? and I will have a look Pat

Agreed, the aliens have definately 'ad 'em! Must have vanished to wherever my partners Gt Gdad has hidden himself!

If you don't have the address, the best thing to do would be to get the birth certificate for the child born 1860 and one born 1862 and you will get either one or two addresses. Kate.

The same happened to my gggrandfather and family who lived in Manchester. After some research, they had moved to Manningham in Bradford to work in the cotton mills there and appeared on the 1861 census in that neck of the woods. They reappeared in Manchester in 1871. There must have been some crisis going on in the cotton industry and they had to move to find work. Maureen

Hi Maureen (Sorry to hijack your thread, Norman) On 'Who do you think you are' last night they explained that in the 1860's there was a cotton crisis as no cotton was coming in from USA due to the civil war. Major starvation etc hit several cotton towns, including Manchester, I presume. NB: My rellies have disappeared ion 1881 (except two grown up sons?) Where do they go? Louise

Thanks for your responses. Unfortunately my grandfather was a bootmaker so I would not have thought the cotton crisis would have affected him and as far as I can determine from later census none of the kids were involved in it. From later census you will note that they lived at 22 Oxford Road, Chorlton on Medlock during the 71/81/91periods and later moving to Manor Road in Urmston for the 1901 census. August and Caroline were born in German and I understand were married in Germany but I don't know when they actually moved to the UK. All the kids were born in Manchester. Maybe there was a true life 'Close Encounters' and were brought back by the Aliens in time for the 1871 census. Regards...........Norm

I have been through all the German born people living in Manchester on 1861 census, and cannot find them anywhere! I have noticed most of them are visitors and lodgers, so perhaps the family is split up and the name transcribed completely wrong, we seem to have problems spelling British names correct so this could be spelt as anything! They must be somewhere! I hate to give up. Sorry. Lol Sara

It took a while and in the end only looked because the surname ended with ......ING !....Just stuck to Caroline / Emma when searching as they were less likely to be mis-transcribed !
