Hi Jess This is an aside, rather than a serious query (I THINK) but do you have anything on that Ephraim Charman in Charlwood? My Hedgers go to Charlwood - possibly marry a Charlotte Charman, but I need to check that out - and catch Ephraims like the measles. The tree is covered in them (and the wonderfully named Melancthon Hedger) like a rash. |

I have been through the whole of Reigate District in 1841 and have only come up with this additional William of the right age. The only adult Williams are the one already mentioned in Charlwood and one who is working on a farm in Burstow (he might be married to Ann but there are no children). I did find the William born in Ockley but his father is Michell (?Michael) and it isn't in Reigate District either. I assume you have William as his father from the marriage certificate. HO 107 1076 Book 6 Folio 10 Leigh (Superintendent Registrar's District of Reigate) Edward Charman, aged 45, Butcher Elizabeth Charman, aged 40 Elizabeth Charman, aged 15 Mary Charman, aged 10 Clara Charman, aged 9 William Charman, aged 7 Edwin Charman, aged 5 Ellen Charman, aged 2 All born in Surrey Charlotte |

Elaine, it very odd, because she deffo married my man in the name of Mary Stedman , so she could be the Step daughter of Mr Coomber Snr, which is why she is accomodating him, after her marriage, he having cared for her after her mother has died? found her bap anyway MARY STEDMAN Female Event(s): Birth: Christening: 13 JUN 1813 Worth, Sussex, England Death: Burial: Parents: Father: THOS STEDMAN Family Mother: CHARLOTTE ** no obvious sibs in the batch ------------------------------------------------------- thinking out loud, so i dont forget - marriage Charlotte stedman->Coomber- Sussex? No Charlwood - in 1827- thanks Elaine BUT that means either Thomas Died, or never existed |

Jess, Have searched Familysearch and James Coomber married Sarah Stedman(note spelling) 27/9/1827 Charlwood!. So this looks like Mary Stedman is James Coombers dau in law, ie dau by marriage. Since she was born 1819 , before they married, she has kept her mothers name.( sorry to cast aspersions on your ancestors!) I do think ,however sinceJames Coomber 1799/1800 Charlwood is the lodger of your William Charman and Mary (nee Stedman) on 1861 then we have found your Mary Stedman on 1851. Having a look for William Charman now. Elaine x. |

Jess, Sorry to muddy the waters! Im sure theres a logical explanation to this. This probably isnt your Mary, and shes probably a daughter from James Coombers previous marriage(if he had one).Cant help you with William Charman. Just out of interest - have you found Mary on 1851? Elaine x. |

Jess, This is a bit strange - On 1861 the Charmans (William + Mary nee Stedman)have a James Coomber lodger b1799 Charlwood. If you follow James Coomber the lodger back to 1851 he has an unmarried son William Coomber b 1834 Charlwood +dau in law Mary Steadman b Worth 1819 with a lodger Mary Steadman b1841. Mary is an unmarried Housekeeper.Bearing in mind your Williams age do you think he changed his name to marry the housekeeper? (just a shot in the dark!) William Coomber b1834 disappears from 1861. William Charman appears in 1861. Both families lived in the same road. Elaine x. |
