Hi Jess. I have got Williams birth certificate here and it states Birth-William Mckegg. Born 3 st lawrence court st lawrence York Mother-Bridget Mckegg late Breen formaly Crane. Father- Dennis Mckegg. On the 1881 census William and his mother were living in long close lane after Dennis`s death in 1880 in York. Bridget remarried from this address to John. Sorry to put you to all this trouble but as you can see they are a problem.. Vanessa

Carrie. In 1891 he is down as a 42year old man living with his mother (Bridget). at the same address as the others. That can not be possible. He should be 12 years old and his mother`s surname should now be DRINKELL because she remarried in 1881 to a JOHN DRINKELL. And she says she is 59years old and from America. She died that year and she was only 45years old and from Ireland. Now you know why i am going round the bend!! Vanessa

The problem with these folk that say they are born Places like York, they often arent - and it actually easier to trace them if they say the name of the village ( abeit just outside York) that they were actually born in. Image the difference John bYork 1873= hundreds and John born 1873 Lower Bottom Wrinkle..... 1 probably! ----------------------------------------- what was marys maiden anme?

Carrie

Carrie Report 13 Apr 2006 21:27

What about the 1891, where does he state he was born then

Vanessa

Vanessa Report 13 Apr 2006 21:26

Hi Carrie. William was born in York in 1878 and is still in York on the 1881 census with his mother Bridget.(But she`s another story!). Vanessa

Evening Vanessa Does William ONLY State York as place of birth?

Vanessa

Vanessa Report 13 Apr 2006 21:18

Good evening Carrie. Yes. Eventually with the help of others on GR. but the surname is misspelt on every census. MCKEY-MCKEG. Even my great great great grandparents marriage in Ripon in 1847 the surname was spelt MCCAIG. Their son Dennis`s birth in Selby his surname is spelt MCAGE. Has you can see this is why i am going bonkers. Vanessa

Thanks Jess. I wonder if they were still in Leeds. Dennis was born in 1902 and died in 1902 in York. His burial date was 08/02/1902. He only lived for 1 month. They could have moved to York while Mary was pregnant with him. Vanessa
