Find Ancestors

after much searching Ancestry and freebmd I am still unable to find my grandfathers birth although he is on the 1901 census aged 4 at West Ham,Essex. His name is Albert Ernest Nichols so (I presume) b 1897 Canning Town Essex and he died approx 1976 at West Ham but I can find no birth registration for him having searched 1893-1899...can someone please help? Mothers name Sarah and father Samuel. Thanks Sylvie

Did you check NICHOLLS as well as NICHOLS?

Do you know when the parents married ? Could he have been registered under mother´s maiden name. (Cant seem to find him on 1901 census ?)

Found death on BMD. Albert Ernest Nicholls October/November/December 1976 Bexley Ref: 11 0357 Gives a date of birth as 16/08/1900 Hope this helps? Ffion

Yes Jules, Elain and Germain- also seached under nicholes he was youngest child of about 12 and have parents marriage cert in Stepney 1871..sorry 1891 census ..still looking fro him in the 1901.

Hi Ffion - sorry wrong one definately Nichols was living at 82 vincent street, West Ham in 1891with widowed mother Sarah Anne and 7 siblings - thanks for looking.

Do you know exactly when he died and where? In 1976 the dates of birth are placed on the death registers and you could look it up that way. Ffion

thanks Leanne but not mine- definately Nichols-all other siblings registered under this spelling and found his marriage to first wife in 1909 still in West Ham -I know he existed as I remember him..he's my mystery at the moment - also found him on ww1 site awarded medals 1914-1918...Sylvie

DON'T discard them just because they have a different spelling. You'd be suprise of how many different spellings of surnames I have in my tree. A lot of people back in those days wrote the name how they thought it was spelt. For example I have Ayres in my tree and I have found births under the spelling Hares, Harse. Leanne.

Thanks Leanne will kepp info you sent-have had problems in previous generations but from this family have traced all but himself -have marriages of all siblings- same spelling but he is a brick wall. thanks again for everyones help will continue my mission-sylvie

Ffion - still living in Canning Town lived there all his life- died at home about 76-77. Sylvie

That is what i thought Jim but try finding any of this family in 1901!!! Wonder if the mother has remarried and some of them took the new name I have found this happen in my tree. Then he reverted to his birth name on marriage. Germaine x
