Can anyone help please. Have just got a marriage cert.(reg. in Chelsea) that tells me that William Alfred Findley Oliver (a very grand name!!) had a father also called William Alfred. By the time junior got married at the end of 1884 his father was deceased. Looked on the 1881 census for the Middlesex area and there are 3 it could be. How do I begin to narrow down the choices. 2 of the possibilities don't have him on just a wife with junior and siblings. The other has father, wife and children. Can't find a possible death to get vague idea from that. Hope this makes sense-Help! Deb

William A.F. was born in 1861, don't know father's date of birth. Only have the info from marriage cert. not birth.

You could try tracking the 3 suspects and seeing which of them is still alive in 1891 (after the 1884 marriage). Or you could get junior's birth cert which would give his mother's name. What is William senior's occupation on the marriage cert and does this tally with any of the chaps in 1881?

Marriage cert. dated Nov. 16th 1884 and he states he is 23- so most likely 1861

Occupation for Will senior is a traveller. Not sure of the occupation of the Will mentioned on 1881 census.

Wanted to try and get a match on census before ordering a birth cert. so that I would konw it was right one.

If you add his marriage details, who he married etc, this will help us find him in a later census, it might make it easier to trace him back? Otherwise, you should obtain his birth cert. and then post the details from that and we can have another look!

I assume a travelling salesman. Will junior married Eliza Amy Gardner in Nov. 1884 in Chelsea. However she calls herself Amy Eliza on my g. grandad's birth cert.

I take it this is the marriage: William Alfred F Oliver 1884 Oct-Nov-Dec Chelsea Volume: 1a Page: 573 bride either Louisa White or Eliza Amy Gardner. What does William say is his age and birthplace on 1901 census?

Hadn't gone there on 1901. Truth is I'm having trouble with spouse Eliza Amy aswell. Her father too was deceased on marriage cert. and have 2 possibilties for her on 1881.
