Hi all please may I ask for some assistance tracking down information on my 2x Great Grandfather Edward Stone?
I believe his father may have been Charles Stone (1816c) as they both lived at 177-178 Mousehole Lane, Millbrook, Southampton.
He was born 1845c in Winchester and died prior to the 1911 census in Shirley. In the 1911 census his wife Alice Stone was still alive as a widow with three (of five) daughters still living at 64 Pound Street, Shirley, Southampton.
Using the census results there was approximately 12-13 years between Edward & Alice. So I believe Alice to be born approximately 1858c.
He had five daughters all born in Southampton: Bessie Stone (c1879), Mary Stone (c1883), Ethel Stone (c1889), Caroline/Carrie Stone (c1895) and Rose Stone (c1901). Caroline Stone being my great grandmother.
I searched for a marriage record on Genes in the 1870’s before their first born and it returned a result for December 1874 in Shirley, Southampton. It said Edward married either a Sarah Jane Mills, Alice Gale or Edmund Powell. I checked this against familysearch.org and it gave the following results:
Alice Gale born 1853 married Edmund Powell 26/12/1874 - Parent Edward Gale
Edward William Stone born 1844 married Sarah Jane Mills 27/12/2012 - Parent Charles Stone
Is it possible familysearch.org just has a typo? All the names, age differences and Edwards’s father all seem to be very coincidental?
The only other marriage I can find is Edward Stone & Alice Stone - 7 Aug 1879 St. John's, Portland, Dorset, England but there are no other details.
Going back to my great grandmother Caroline Stone I have ordered what I believe to be her birth and death certificates:
