The army records on Ancestry are the ones from the National Archives at Kew - they might have other regimental records for the Royal Munster Fusiliers, his first regiment. WW1 he appears to have been in the Labour Corps. Or their may be regimental museum.

The John Fox whose records I sent you was discharged finally in March 1920. His age does vary. When he first joined the Army in 1887 his age is given as 19 (YOB 1868) but when he was called up in 1914 it is given as 42 (YOB 1872).

The two lots of records are definitely for the same man as the 1914 one has a ref to his previous Army No (2257) - does look as if he did not know his age or maybe he lied about it both times - the first because (if born 1866) at 17 he might have been too young and the second time because at 48 he might have been too old?

Potty Report 5 Nov 2012 13:11

Geraldine, do you have proof that the John b1873 was the son of James Fox and Julia Carey? Not likely that they would have two sons called John unless the 1866 one died.

Having checked the Pension Records, that census is not your John as he was in South Africa from 8/06/1900 to 18/10/1901. He also served in the East Indies from 1889 - 1894. He left the Army in 1903. Was his occupation given as soldier on the 1902 marriage cert?

Potty Report 4 Nov 2012 12:10

Geraldine, there are two Army Pension Records on Ancestry for John - one from 1887 to 1901 and the other for WW1. His father is named as James and the some of the children were born in Castletownroche.

There is this John in 1901 but he is shown as married and John & Norah didn't marry until 1902. Is he shown as a bachelor on the marriage cert?
