Alexander's marriage cert would be clue to see if Esther's age and father's details match.

As you say census ages are never anything to go by back in 1861 when maths wasn't a strongpoint.

I have ages varying wildly in my own tree ..

Thats interesting. The first census (1861) appears way out as Esther Hook (Reid/Reed) was born around 1828 not 1837. But the 1871 census find would fit. Also her daughter Esther Jane appears to have died in 1863, My Esther had a daughter Esther born 1870 so possibly a 2nd Esther after the first ones early death. Alexanders death of 1871 would fit as she remarried Thomas Williams in 1873 and her status was widower. It is just the 1861 census, birth date 9 years out? (I know it's not uncommon for them to be wrong though)

Couldn't see the 1859 Marriage that Mike posted, to check image (and WDYTYA was about to start!), shame it's not there, would say Sebastian needs that Cert.


I did have a look on Ancestry 'Trees', and quite a few share Esther Hook, as well as some Members in 'Search Trees' here, but not sure who has seen actual Certs...

Thanks. I took a look on Ancestry. There is a marriage (no mention of Hook, just Esther Vallet). Tried to follow Esther Vallet and found she was born in Lancashire so I don't think it is the same one. Thanks anyway

Thank you for the death dates. The info I am short on is the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census. I know when she married Thomas Williams she married in the name of Esther Reid (her father on the certificate is named as James Hook and her mothers maiden name was Newson). So I can only conclude that somewhere between 1851 and 1871 she married a Mr.Reid, but I cannot find the marriage certificate
