It look like the ennumerator wrote down the wrong thing.

Do you know that Mary is his mother?

( James marries in 1884 to Mary or Annie)

Looking at 1871, his father looks to be Thomas. May he assumed role of 'head of the house' when his father died

definitely says 'son' for James and 'wife' for Mary Ann, but she must be his mother, as she is a widow and aged 59!
