there is a mystery surrounding my Grandmother, the secrets were taken to the grave with her, my great grandmother and my father. i keep drawing a blanks the more i reseach

My grand mother was born a Nash, on her marrage certicate was known as a Mathews, know all here married life as a Burrows, but on her death certificate was know as Nash-Burrows

She was born as Emily Nash 6/3/1904 but we alway celerbrated her birthday on 13th april

i believer her father was william Nash born 1874
i Believe her mother was Annie Haley born 1873

sudenly for no reason Willian Nash disapears into thin air an a Charles Mathews appears on the seen.. A few years before my fathers died he told me we were known as Nash-Burrows but we drop the Nash from the surname.

A children we always knew my grandmother Mum as great granny Matthews

For some strange reason , but i could be barking up the wrong tree. that Willian Nash and Charles Matthews to be the same person

the only other thing i remember when we went to see our great grandmother she lived in the bermonsey/ greenwich areas of london

and for a strange reason also i an uable to find a paper trail I have a bith certificate for my grandmother and her marrage certificate

I would be very greatfull for any help

This may be completely irrelevant but I think it's worth throwing into the melting pot. Coincidentally this happened in Greenwich.

My friend was doing her family tree and was really struggling with one particular branch. There seemed to be parallel families with the same first names but different surnames. Eventually we decided there were far too many coincidences and studied them more closely. The pattern that emerged was that anything they did which was church-based (hatchings, matchings, despatchings) they used one surname, and anything state-based - census returns - they used the other. Fortunately this was consistent and once we had the overall picture it was glaringly obvious.

When was her marriage, please?

Also, cannot see a Nash-Burrows death?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 12 Aug 2012 14:40

You say you have her birth cert....then say you 'believe' who her parents were.

What does the birth cert say about them?

The odds are that William Nash and his wife parted.......and she took up with Charles Matthews, with or without the involvement of the vicar. And not necessarily in that order............

Janice.
I´ve also got one like yours. Married in his own surname, children all registered in his surname& all married in his surname, but on the census he appears with his wife every 10 years with her maiden name as his surname & a completely different christian name, but the same occupation.
His death was registered under his birth surname & his will was in his birth surname. After his death, his wife reverted to her married surname.
Never got to the bottom of that one. :-( :-(

patchem Report 12 Aug 2012 19:13

Presumably this is the marriage, wrongly recorded as Emily N?
Marriages Dec 1928
BURROWS Stephen Matthews Hammersmith 1a 695
Matthews Emily N Burrows Hammersmith 1a 695

She can call herself whatever she wants, as long as she does not try to deceive.

What are your comments about showing on the electoral register in 1929/1930 with parents and sister as Nash?

There is a marriage for an Annie L Nash and a Charles E Matthews in Fulham in 1922

Could it be that Annie remarried and Emily took on her stepfather's name???

Robert

Can I copy over Janice's post, and refer you again to my found Electoral registers:
'William Henry
Annie
Emily Maud
Florence May
are at 1 Sarah's Buildings, Greenwich in 1930 as Nash.'

What was Emily's address on the marriage certificate?

Her name at death is what the informant called her (for whatever reason).

Just to query:
How do you know that the birth certificate for Emily M Nash is actually her?

Also, have you found marriages or deaths for any of her siblings and, if so, in what names?

Robert

Robert Report 12 Aug 2012 21:08

The informant of emily death was her daughter my aunt Edna. i obtained the date of her date her birth certificate by working from census records and working back from her marriage certificate, as there was only one emily nash born in 1904. her address on her marriage certifacate was 5 railway cottages fulham as my grand father address was 3 railway cottages fulham. by this time she was estranged from her mother and i believe she was in lodgings at the time of her marriage. this was tied cottages as my grand father and my great grandfather both worked on the railway as platelayers. im still working on the death of her brother and sisters. my father wasnt brought up by his mother Emily he was brought up by Annie her mother. i only ever meet two of her sister as a child Annie and winifred Annie was known as Lil and winifred was know as phil as her second name was phylis. my sister second name was May named after Florence

please could you copy over janices post.

im not suprised after they marrying my grand father that emily move back home as they were often seperating and getting back to gether as my grandfather was a bit of a gambler, as Emily often walked out or though her husband out

My main problem my father never discussed his family . he visted them but never discussed them, not even with my mother
