Hi guys - sorry been out shopping :-)

Yes Dea I had thought possibly William Jacob(s) was actually William Jacob Steadman.

And I too had looked at that Thomas....on A there is a marriage to Ellen Vickers (marriage 1870) but that marriage is on bmd as Stadmans and her Vickras. And if this was to be him then she was still alive when he married Jane :-(

I suspect a bit of skullduggery going on!!!!!!!

Will be offline now for a bit - rushing to get slow-roast pork cooked so daughter number 2 can have a cooked dinner before returning to Wimbledon this afternoon :-)

I can't see why Thomas's father should be William Jacobs on the marriage entry - perhaps he was 'William Jacob Steadman' ???

I found this death which fits his age and the area:

BUT, 'IF' I am correct, he was not dead before 1881 but boarding with his brother Mark & family!

Thjis would be the marriage of William + Mary:

William Stedman
England, Marriages, 1538–1973

spouse: Mary Davies

groom's name: William Stedman
bride's name: Mary Davies
marriage date: 26 May 1823
marriage place: Madeley,Shropshire,England
indexing project (batch) number: M03379-1

Thomas Stedman
England, Births and Christenings, 1538-1975

Ivy Report 15 Jul 2012 09:42

I was surprised that the groom's father is named as William Jacobs, so I tried looking for St*dm*n in Staffordshire born around 1833.

There were three likely candidates in 1871:

The oldest, William b approx 1830 in Wolverhampton, married to Ann, with child Edwin, survived to 1890 and can be seen with his family in 1881.

Thomas William b approx 1836 in Wolverhampton, is living with his wife Ann in Bilston (where Ann was born in about 1841) and children including daughter Harriet. He died in 1880, and his widow and family can be found in Bilston in 1881.

The third one, which seems possible, is living with Mary Harper aged 59 (widow) and Edward Stedman aged 50 (unm). Thomas is shown as an unmarried son, aged 36; all three of these are born in Codsall.

Looking back to the 1841 Codsall census, there is a William Steadmain aged 55, with Mary aged 25, Elizabeth aged 20 and Thomas aged 6; so I thought perhaps William was a widower, his child Edward aged 20 not at home, and the others as Thomas' siblings.

It then occurred to me that it might be possible that in 1841 Mary was William's second wife, which would be why in 1871 Edward is shown as a boarder, but Thomas as a son.

This does seem to tie into a marriage in 1844 between Mary Stedman and John Harper in Wolverhampton.

Name: Mary Steadman
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1844
Registration district: Wolverhampton
Inferred County: Staffordshire
Volume Number: 17
Page Number: 385

However, I cannot locate a marriage between William St*dm*n and Mary; I wonder if Jacobs was Mary's maiden name? Also, looking for a death for William Steadman after 1841, there are three in Staffordshire, but all after 1844.

Meanwhile, Thomas Stedman born in Codsall is unmarried in 1851 and in 1871; the only other marriage in Staffordshire in the 1870s is a much younger Thomas (to Emma Thatcher Ward in 1880, and they are seen together in the 1881 census); so unless Thomas had married after 1851 and had "forgotten" in 1871, or married in the 1870s outside Staffordshire, then the marriage record may be incorrect as stating either Thomas or Jane as widowed?

Perhaps since neither were in their 20s at their marriage, the vicar just put them down as widowed?

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 15 Jul 2012 08:02

The marriage status for Jane in 1877 shows her as "widow"

parents: William Jacobs
spouse: Jane Homer
groom's name: Thomas Steadman
groom's birth date: 1833
groom's age: 44
bride's name: Jane Homer
bride's birth date: 1831
bride's age: 46
marriage date: 29 Oct 1877
marriage place: Walsall, Statford, England
groom's father's name: William Jacobs
bride's father's name: Andrew Homer
groom's marital status: Widowed
bride's marital status: Widowed
indexing project (batch) number: M06065-3
system origin: England-EASy
source film number: 1526217

I'm not convinced she was...but I can't find her in 1871 census - eyes again please?? :-)

Also I can't find a suitable death for Thomas> She appears in 1881 to be widowed (already)

I have her in 1881 as well (now) working as a charwoman in the workhouse

Thanks all once again!

Ivy Report 14 Jul 2012 16:27

This entry might be possible:

Name: Dora Homes
Age: 50
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1841
Relation: Sister
Gender: Female
Where born: Worcestershire, England

Civil parish: Walsall Foreign
Ecclesiastical parish: St Peter
Town: Walsall
County/Island: Staffordshire
Country: England

Registration district: Walsall
Sub-registration district: Walsall
ED, institution, or vessel: 24

Piece: 2253
Folio: 6
Page Number: 5
Household Members:
Name Age
Jane Steadman 59 widow
Dora Homes 50 single

Points against:
- "Dora" - forename, surname, age
- Jane - states born Gloucs

However, Jane Homer is not all that common a combination, and the Jane Homer b in Dudley can be distinguished from others in 1841, 1851 and 1861 - there is then this marriage in 1877 in Walsall:

Name: Jane Homer
Gender: Female
Birth Date: abt 1831
Age: 46
Father's Name: Andrew Homer <<<<<
Spouse's Name: Thomas Steadman
Spouse's Age: 44
Spouse's Father's Name: William Jacobs
Marriage Date: 29 Oct 1877
Marriage Place: Walsall, Staffordshire, England

You are a spoilsport Dea! It could be sister Mary...I have her only up to 1871 census....so am now going to see if I can disprove it ha ha!!

Incidentally, the age isn't correct for her either...she was actually born 16 September 1838

Dea

Dea Report 14 Jul 2012 09:23

Isn't 'that' Mary on 1881 more likely to be her sister who shows on '41 and '51 census and is the correct age ?
