Hi Sylvia,

Yes, I found that birth at our local church St Peter's which rather puzzled me as I couldn't find a census record for Charles, the policeman, in 1871 with a Jabez and Elizabeth Ann.

Makes you wonder if John Henry had another name of Charles, although he seemed to use Henry on all census records.

Orby, Lincolnshire is about 100 miles from Leeds, Yorks. so it makes one wonder what brought John Henry to Leeds back in those days as his father was a Farmer.

The Probate Wendy found does related to my family, Sarah Bullough being the mother of Elizabeth Ann.

Just out of curiosity I looked on the 1911 census at 71 Clarendon Road Leeds (the address given for 1916) and in 1911 it was a Theological College with the Rev Ottway in charge. Also on the 1911 Thomas Henry Sidney was Sidney Thomas Henry so they were obviously used to swapping their names around,

Hi Susan, Choccy and Wendy,

With the additional information Wendy supplied about THS Panton's address of 71 Clarendon Road, Leeds for his father that confirms correct Jabez found.

THS was born in Burgh le Marsh and his sister Ada in Orby, Lincs. The family must have then returned to Yorkshire where another 3 children were born in Leeds, before returning once more to Lincolnshire.

Many people are registered with 1 or 2 names, then are given additional forenames when they are baptised.

The birth registration is not altered in those cases.


It has even been found where a baby is registered with 1 name, then baptised with a very different forename ............. and uses that name throughout life.


Makes it very difficult for us!

Further on in the Military records that Choccy found it states his address and of his father as 71 Clarendon Road Leeds, this was on a form dated 14/10/1916.

At the time of his demob 26/07/1919 he states his birth as 18/10/1898, his mother as Hannah of Orby Farm, Burgh le Marsh, Lincolnshire. Although it doesn't say that she is his next of kin. He was in the 16th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment. I think that Choccy is right with the death she found.

Looks like you have solved my problem.

The thing I don't understand is that his birth record, Bramley 9b 320, just gives his name as Jabez and he is listed as just Jabez on all the census records, even the one he wrote himself in 1911...??? Surely he should have been rgistered with his full names at birth?

The name Sidney seems to run in the Panton family and his mother was Elizabeth Ann Bullough so it all appears to fit.

Is it possible you can email me THS Panton's military records if I PM you my email address?

The death cert for his wife will say if she was wife or widow of so you will have some idea whether he predeceased her or not.

Yes, I have the 1871 census.

The Jabez I am looking for a death for is the son of Henry(JHP) who was married to Elizabeth Ann Bullough who was the daughter of John & Sarah Bullough.

Jabez age 26 on the census was the brother of Elizabeth Ann.

1881 census Jabez (1869) is the grandson of Sarah Bullough who's daughter Elizabeth Ann Panton died in 1880 as you found.

Jabez (1869) went on to marry Hannah Mary Lumsdon in 1897.

You would think with a name like Jabez a death should be easy to find.

I did have a look at the CWGC site to see if he had been killed in WW1 but couldn't see anything, although I thought he might be a bit on the old side to be called up for duty.

As his family originated from Lincolnshire I also thought they may have moved there seeing as the death of a Hannah Mary appears to be in that area.

This is that same family in 1881 it says that Jabez aged 36 is Jebez's father aged 11,no Elizabeth here ,he does seem to appear that he lives in his Grandparents house until marriage...all a bit strange.

Do you have his birth cert or are you just going on the census you have ?

Did he join the forces at all or maybe went abroad for some reason ?

Hi Susan,

Yes his father was John Henry although on most census records JH is just listed as Henry without the John.

Don't know about the name Jacob ?, not come across anything so far which relates to that name.

Probably, like you, I've searched all the records I can think of and various spellings and not come across a Jabez listed.

Might have to put this death on the 'back burner' for a while.
