Hi. In the hope there is an expert on London railway companies out there i want to pose this question. My ancestor John Dyer was a platelayer in Bethnal Green in 1885 ( written on his marriage certificate) and then in 1888 he is a railway platelayer and living at 7 Grove Terrace, Elm Road, Leytonstone ( his job as stated on his daughters birth certificate). As he does not appear on any census before 1891 i thought i could trace him through his job. Does anyone know what railway company he would be working for or are there any suggestions you can make? |

I have thought he was older than usual at that time to get married for the 1st time but i don`t see how i can prove it either way. As i say he and his father are very difficult to find and that is why i thought i`d trace him back to Wales through his railway work. Easier said than done i think. As i say only in 1851 do William and John appear together. There are other brothers but they are always in Wales. have briefly looked at railway sites on the internet but i get the impression i need to find the nearest railway company to his address and then move on from there |

Leytonstone [opened 1862] and Bethnal Green [opened 1872] was on the Great Eastern Railway [GER] until 1923 when it became the London North Eastern Railway [LNER] |

It's worth looking at the Railway records on Ancestry. He may be listed and it will give the Company he worked for, if so. |

If the 1891 above is correct he was George J in 1901 a LAbourer and John George 1911 a Navvy and General Labourer. |

Ah! That one doesn't show up on FMP and what a coincidence that both the names come up with just the years difference. |

Looks like a transposition error for the FMP record: |

hi. Sorry, just been able to check your messages. Yes Stuart that is him in 1891,1901 and 1911. He also used the middle names George and William which i think has added to my problems because there is a chance he used different names at different times. |
