HI Stuart. Yes thats him although i can`t prove at the moment it`s my William Dyer. It`s just a clue to follow and i do have reason to think he was alive after 1887. I do not know when he died though. I have ordered many death certificates and i have not found him yet.I have just looked up possible records for Great Eastern Railway and they may not have records for 1885-1887 so i may be stuck after all. I`ll have to think about it for a while.
cheers

Looking at my family of railway workers on the census' I have I noticed that thye all put the occupation followed by the word railway ie Platelayer Railway.

Which makes me wonder if the 1891 census posted by Stuart above means he's working for a carriage company rather than the railway itself, however the railways did [and do] have carpenters.thye built the signal boxes for one thing.

The other thing is the fact that where he is in Goring means he's on the Great Western Railway [GWR] although workers often moved around the country, they nearly always stayed within the same railway company.

Hello Patricia. My wifes family were carpenters on the railway and because they are always on the census we can follow them easily from Yorkshire to London. My ancestor John Dyer had two Brothers, William and Lot. Even as young as 13 they are in Wales away from their family. No sign of John or parents ,William and ann .Ithink it will remain a mystery and i will just have to accept they didn`t like appearing on the census. The only clues i have are that William and Lot live around Chepstow and Tidenham in the 1880 and 1890`s. In 1886 i have found a record of a William Dyer, a carpenter of Tidenham putting his sick wife ,Ann into the workhouse in Chepstow while he" searches for work". This information gives me clues but as i say i think i may be stuck and i find it frustrating i cannot even find a death for William. It`s like they don`t want to be found.I have made a note of your suggestions. Thanks
