Can anyone help me to find a birth the the above who was my great grandmother. Christening has mother Sarah listed as parent, but have been unable to identify a birth. On the 1851 census she is listed with grandparents Richard and Esther and an aunt. It states Susannah granddau 1847 Tealby. I assumed maybe illegimate but on her marriage to Robert Etches in 1870 Southwell, Notts it states father Richard, bailiff. Can anyone help?? Thanks

She may not have been registered...There were no penalties to do so until 1875 ish

It wasn't unknown to make up a fathers name to save face when marrying .kept them honourable with the in-laws !!

If her baptism only shows a mums name then it high,y likely she was illegitimate coupled with the fact that grandparents are looking after her , Mum may have been in live in domestic service.

jax Report 14 Feb 2012 16:58

Tree on ancestry does not mention a daughter called Sarah although there was one called Susan born 1821

It also says Richard dies in 1855??

It would appear that as she was brought up by her grandparents, it's her grandfather's name she has put forward in place of a father.

Do you have the marriage cert for 1870 ?

Was it definitely her that married Robert Etches?.
Could it have been her mother also called Susannah ? ( which would make the father's name correct)

Found this and it's too old for the granddaughter

Thanks guys what a lot of information, Edgar Dawson was my grandfather and yes he left a bunch of children and a wife when he died. The two youngest, twins were sent to Barnardos and didn't return home until they were 14. I think it possible that the birth in 1847 illegible could be Susan/Susannah as she was not born in 1826 as the census indicates. Still comes back to a probable illegimate birth and her Grandfather and grandmother brought her up.

I did mention that the age looked more like 45
