Hi everyone. I am thoroughly confused at the moment. Can anyone please help me, maybe I am overlooking the obvious I dont know.
Census 1881. Emmanuel James B.1851c. Hd Hunslet Yorkshire (my Gt.Gt.Grandads Brother) Elizabeth is his mother from Worcestershire Jane Woodin stated as niece Worcestershire
Marriage Dec 1881 Emmanuel James to Jane Woodin. Hunslet Yorkshire.
Emmanuel was born in Cheshire then the family moved to Worcestershire. I am trying to find out how she is a niece, who her parents were and was it the same one he married.
I am a bit confused at the moment ..was this legal if she is his niece? Any thing would be appreciated.
:-S Belinda.

Hmmm, well it clearly states "Niece" on the 1881 image.
Edit: I wonder if that was error on the part of the enumerator?

Emmanuel is clearly down as head on 1881, but could Jane actually be his mother's niece?
What was his mum's maiden name? Who did his father's sisters marry (if any)?

So in fact...........if she was the niece of Emmanuel's mother, they were possibly cousins.

Belinda, I'm not convinced that she was actually his niece, but perhaps his cousin?
Abel Woodin married Sarah Giles. Emmanuel married Rosanna Giles. Is that the connection?

So it looks like Jane Woodin was the daughter of Sarah Giles, who was the sister of his first wife Rosanna.
By law (but not by blood) Jane was his niece. No worse, I think, than cousins marrying.
