Lauren, I've followed the same line as you and come to the same conclusions, have gone back to 1841.

The only thing I can suggest is getting Sophia's birth cert, or one of her siblings, to see what father's name is given.

It may be that he was William James, or James William, and was known by whichever name he preferred.

Could be just a simple mistake on the marriage register.

& in 1911 census it states she is born in Tetsworth, which linked me to her in the 1891...

I can see how you'd make that connection Lauren - I'd be tempted along those lines myself!

But, I think we need to establish some hard facts, we'll see what we can find.

This is the James Wheeler 1861 that Ann posted,

My gt grandmother is Margaret Tomkins born 1912. Her parents are Albert Tomkins born 1878 and Harriet Damaris Cooper born 1881.

It's using census records that I've believed her parents to be Alfred Cooper and Sophia Wheeler.

Also the name Damaris is not very common, and the fact this is Harriets middle name and Sophias mothers name (Damaris Holland) seems like more than a coincidence!!!

Now this one with father James is LONDON
the one with William is Oxford

The 1851 & 1861 look a sure match for the Sophia with Alfred in the 1871 and later census.

What was the address on the marriage certificate and who were the witnesses - might give us some clues?

Did you get her maiden name from one of the children's birth certificates?

I have the incorrect info on my tree. I believed her father was William Wheeler as I could only find 1 Sophia Wheeler with that birth date/birth place.

I then found the marriage record which shows her father as James and not William.
