Find Ancestors

Hi there.

I am trying to find some information on Vincent Douglas Barrett born around 1886 on Isle of Man. He then emigrated to Australia (not sure of the year) and married Emily Sarah Hunter (born abt. 1886).

They had one son, William Harry Barrett, born 29 April 1919.

Vincent's father was Henry Barrett born about 1854 and mother Elizabeth Cowley, born about 1858. Fairly sure Henry was also born on Isle of Man but can't find any info on him either. Vincent Douglas Barrett was my great grandfather and I'd love to get info on this line of the tree.

I have managed to get info on the Hunter side going back to about the 11th century, but the Barrett's are proving a little more difficult.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you do much for everyone's help. It has been amazing! I found out that my great great grandfather married his sisters servant. All these pieces coming together, its fantastic!!

I now have all this information about Henry Barrett, and none for his parents so I will keep researching.

Rebecca - there is loads of information about the Barretts on the Australian electoral rolls - click on the purple "send message" button under my name and give me your email address and I'll send them to you (you now know not to put it on here ;-) )

The 1909 electoral roll shows that Douglas' father Henry Edward (Cabinet maker) and mother Elizabeth were in Australia, along with Henry Edward junior, who was a brassfinisher.

The 1903 shows Henry Edward on his own, so perhaps he went ahead of the rest of the family (not finding any immigration records as yet for any of them).

Possible death for Hy Edw snr in 1910 aged 51 in Melbourne East (reg 10002), father Hy Edw, mother Elizabeth (may be informant errors/assumptions).

Hy Edw jnr died in 1950 in St Kilda aged 65 (reg 2276). Father shown as Wm Hy, mother Eliz COWLEY.

Marriage for Hy Edw BARRETT, born Isle of Mann, to Eileen Victoria SCOTT in 1911 (reg 9841).

They had a son named Edward John in 1912 in Brunswick (reg 17948). No further trace of Eileen or Edward.

Possible unassisted immigration for Eilzabeth and boys without Hy E snr?
