Jane Report 26 Sep 2011 13:55

I have two children Mary ann Gray born 1856 in Rawcliffe Yorkshire and ? brother James Gray born 1858 in Rawcliffe Yorkshire. Parents are supposedly JOhn Gray and Hannah Walker. I have been looking for their birth records for many Years and have come to the conclussion that they are probably adopted.

Strangely enough I have just found a Mary ann Walker born Sept 1856 in York and a James Walker born June 1858 in York. Could these be the two children I am looking for. Hannah Walker had a lot of brothers and sisters so she could have been taking care of them for one of them.

The porblem is how do I establish who the parents of Mary Ann and James Walker are. They were born between census years so the census aren't going to help me unless I can find them both living with Walker parents and then I can eliminate them from my enquiries.

Any suggestions where I go from here?.

There were a couple of Gray children born about the right time and in the right area but they came back wrong parents.

Thanks for helping

Jane

Can't find them on the 1861 census.
Is this John & Hannah's marriage?

Thanks Margee

Yes thats them. If the Walker children are not on the 1861 census then it could be the two I'm looking for.

thanks for looking.

Remember it was not compulsory to register births until 1875

Thank s Dea and GlitterBaby

Maybe they didnt register their births. Dea where did you get the baptism dates from please.

John and Hannah Gray possibly had a third child William. this child was registered but unfortunately died. I will send for the cert shortly to make sure this child is John and Hannahs. (Source Yorkshire parish records). It seems strange that they would register one child and not the others. Also I couldnt find James and Mary Ann in the parish records for Rawcliffe.

Thanks again

Thank you Dea for helping me

Familysearch is the mormon site where you have to take most things they say with a pinch of salt. I have not found any proof of those baptism dates anywhere to confirm that they are correct. Yorkshire records are online at ancestry but I could not find either child on them.

Thanks again for your help Dea. I really do appriciate your help.

'Yes, and No' Jane!

This is the new site (was called the Pilot site).

All these records are extracted, with references, and so are correct!

Yes, on the previous site some were 'submitted' which are certainly NOT to be trusted! ;-)

Thanks Dea I didnt know that.

Its strange though how I cant find them in hte actual parish records?? I will have to keep on looking. Everything else points to the children being Grays except I cant find that birth cert.

I am baffled Jane!

How have you got to these people?

What other info do you have on them please?

P.S.

Isn't it just West Yorkshire records which are on-line on Ancestry? - This is East Yorkshire we are looking for.

There are two Rawcliffes: one is a parish northeast of York (North Riding) and one near Goole (East Riding). I am going to the Hull LDS church family history centre tomorrow (Tuesday). They may have the Rawcliffe (East Riding) parish registers on film, if so, would you like me to doublecheck the references from familysearch for you. Sounds as if you might have been looking at the wrong Rawcliffe!

Best wishes

By the way, the correct registration district for Rawcliffe (East) is Goole - I have checked YorkshireBMD and it appears that the births were not registered :-(

Thanks Kim.

Dea they are also at home with John and hannah on the 1871 census.
James married Alice Elvidge and Mary Ann Married William Batty. I have James marriage cert and it states his father was John Gray.

Maybe I'm making all this too complicated and they are in fact John and Hannahs children, But it would be nice to prove it.

Thanks again Everyone

I think the baptisms have proved that they are their children and I am sure Kim will confirm this for you.

Best of luck.

I did a search in the library catalog at FS. Specifically, I searched for
Source Film Number: 991096
that Dea gives in her post, and found:

Notes Microfilm of mss. in the Borthwick Institute, York.
