I know Kath, true, ;-), but the optimistic person in me hopes that someone, might have wriiten down somthing that has passed through families, that links samuel to his father.. I don't care that he was illegitmate, just would be nice to put down who his father was...but that just wishful thinking on my part, before I started my fathers family tree, I only knew of his three siblings, now I have hundred plus of family names, that have been added by GR members and by accessing the certificates..couldn't have done it without you guys help and others that have kept information and passed it on, cheers ang.

If there was no father named on the birth certificate 150 years ago then I don't think anyone today is going to know anything to help you find him.

I'm sure most of us have illegitimate ancestors in our trees and there is usually nothing you can do to go backwards on that particular line.

Got the birth cert for Samuel, it only has his Mum's name Elizabeth on it, no mention of his dad at all on it, so a dead end for me there. Hopefully someone has some info they might stumble on and see this post and reply...

Best place for records after 1837 is freebmd

....................http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

To obtain certificates using the reference numbers found on freebmd you can apply online to the GRO

...................http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

Hope this helps.

You can buy certificates online from the General Register Office at this address:-

www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

Best place to look up births, marriages and deaths from this period is FreeBMD.

Exactly Mike, although Samuel may have given a name for his father on his marriage certificate (either a made up name to save face or his step-father's name). Only buying the certificate will give Angela the answer to that.

Hi ,T
The only information I have has been from other distant family members on GR, I was unsure of Samuel's date of birth as two GR members have two different dates for him but the same inforamtion about his siblings, I am very new to looking up information, hence why I put it up on here, have no certificates us was unsure where to get them from???I am from NZ and am new to where to look up the information needed in England,

As suspected .... no father.
There wasn't a Mr Crowther.
Elizabeth was single.

This looks like Samuel's christening record from the IGI:-

SAMUEL CROWTHER
Male

Event(s):
Birth:
Christening:
07 MAY 1854 Biggleswade, Bedford, England
Death:
Burial:

Parents:
Mother: ELIZABETH CROWTHER

The record is extracted from parish records so should be correct.

Betsy Crowther appears to be William and Lucy's daughter.

Therefore don't understand your statement about her RE-marrying William Larkinson.

If Samuel was born to unmarried Betsy then there won't be a father's name on the birth certificate

Who did Samuel name as his father on his marriage certificates ?

Was Elizabeth a widow or spinster on her marriage cert to William Larkinson ?

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 20 Sep 2011 10:58

This looks like William and Lucy in the 1851 census:-

CROWTHER, William Head Married M 50 1801 Ag Lab
Biggleswade Bedfordshire
CROWTHER, Lucy Wife Married F 47 1804 Straw Plaiter
Biggleswade Bedfordshire
CROWTHER, Ann Daughter Unmarried F 26 1825 Straw Plaiter Biggleswade Bedfordshire
CROWTHER, Betsy Daughter Unmarried F 17 1834 Straw Plaiter Biggleswade <<<<<(Elizabeth? Samuel's mother perhaps)
CROWTHER, George Son M 7 1844 Scholar Biggleswade
Bedfordshire

Address:
St Andrews Street, Biggleswade

RG number: HO107

It looks to me as if Elizabeth was unmarried when she had Samuel so I don't think you will find out who his father was - unless the father is mentioned on Samuels baptism record.
