Well, there's no obvious sign of him in censuses before 1888.

I found him in 1891 and it looks like he was born between April1864 and December 1864 - if that helps a bit?

Maybe he lied about his father. Perhaps he was illegitimate and just invented a name?

Thanks for replying! Already done that with no success alas - one just has the info taken from my tree with no further information. He must be out there somewhere!!!!!!!

Hi Martin,
Its always good to start with Search Trees (Dark green bar on the top of the page)

There are 2 other members with this person ,birth year, and of this location in their trees.

send them a personal message (pm) telling them how you are related to this person and asking for what you want.
They possibly have other Downham family too.

My family tree research has come to an abrupt halt. William Downham (born 1865 Lambeth) was married to Martha Harris on 25th December 1888 & had 5 known children - William, James, Frederick, Albert & Charles. William Downhham's father on his wedding certificate is noted as John Downham who had already died by 1888. No trace of a relevant birth certificate, nor any entries on the 1871 or 1881 census returns. Any help/info appreciated!!!
