Thank you for all your help. I have added my ancestors to my tree. In my Mum's family, the practice of re-distributing the children amongst the family households who had no or just a couple of kids survived until my lifetime. Also, the girls holding the position of Housekeeper for local Widowers or single men also survived....:-)
The Bowlers also fostered children and took in elderly people as lodgers...care in the community!
Looking at the places of birth it seems they travelled North to Yorkshire with the railways.
