I'm not certain he's one of those. I believe he was born 1837 in Colchester, Essex, although dates could be a few years out. I think he joined the army sometime after 1856. |

How do you know it was after 1856? |

He married in 1856 and his occupation was a baker journeyman. He had a son born in early 1857 and then his occupation was a ag lab. Sometime between then and the 1861 census I believe he joined the army, or maybe even the militia. |

Yes that's him. I have all the info on him up until 1857, but after that I don't know. In 1861 his wife says she is a widow, so I presume he died but can't find record of his death or burial in COlhester. |

So you do not have him on any census with his wife? how do you know you are searching for the correct man |

No but I have his marriage certificate and his son's birth certificate which confims he is the right man. |

Does it have an age for him on this marriage cert? he seems to have two different occupations and why do you think he joined the army? |

Yes and it matches that from the workhouse, as does his father's name and profession. His brothers in the workhouse also help to conclude it's him.The two occupations are definitely him, as his wife and son's details match. |

If his wife was supposed to be widowed by 1861 the son would probably not know his father and could say what ever he want on his marriage certs.I cannot see any others that were in the army though around that time I'm affraid |

No he probably never did, but I wondered why he would have come up with that story, especially twice. The most intruiging thing is when William died, I can't find a record either in the UK or in the army unfortunately. |

That's a possiblity, but the passenger lists are so incomplete for that time I wouldn't know where to start. I suppose I could search foreign censuses to see if he turns up. |
