1861-71 images aren't free until later this summer, but you can search other censuses via:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/022-911.009-e.html

From Margee's 1901 link, you'll see the geographic info at foot of page:

1901 Census of Canada Page Information
District: ON PERTH (South/Sud) (#105)
Subdistrict: Usborne G-4 Page 11

Your guys start on Line 44

Now all the people info was on the above schedule 1, but in 1901, the building/farmhouse info was on schedule 2.
So take the 1901 geographic link on the URL I gave above, and search for district#=105 subdistrict#=g 4
You want page 3:
http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/1901/z/z002/z000095550.pdf
[Farm addy is Conc 14 Lot 16, Usborne Twp, Perth Co, Ontario]

Via http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/countyatlas/SearchMapframes.php
The Twp used to be in Huron Co. It is there today.

I don't know if this land record relates to your Thos:
Full record for Shute, Thomas
Last Name Shute
First Name Thomas
Post Office Exeter
Township Usborne
County Huron
Atlas Date 1879
Concession and Lot Lot size
V, 14 100

Here's the Twp concession map:
http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/countyatlas/images/maps/townshipmaps/hur-m-Usborne.jpg

Conc XIV Lot 16 is marked on map as Hy Doupe (almost extreme Eastern edge).
Some neighbours are: McClocklin, McCurdy, McCurdy, Gilfillan, Rutherford
(names that appear on the 1901 census, but not necessarily with the same forename).

For a modern satellite view, go to http://maps.google.com/ and look up Exeter, Ontario, Canada
(This town is at W edge of Twp.)
Switch to satellite view, then take the road E out of the S end of town (Huron St E/Sideroad 15 & 16).
It ends at 12 Line Rd (the township line). Just 1 short block before that, turn S on Union Line.
The 2nd farm on the right is where your Thos lived - whether it's the same building, I don't know.

NB These 100acre lots were 50 chains x 20 chains (80 chns=1 mile).

Home Children:
Orphans sent to Canada from Britain between 1870-1957. Not all were actually orphans. There were over 100,000 of them between ages of 4-15. Some of the lucky ones were adopted by Canadian families and had a good life. Others were treated as virtual slaves. This year is "The Year of the British Home Child" in Canada.

Many thanks

The family is mistranscribed Shuto on the 1901 census on Automated Genealogy.
I see there's a Home Boy living with them , name of John Conway.

I don't understand why you can't get into the 1901 and 1911 censuses. I just clicked on the link I posted and it takes me right there. Click on 1911 census then click on Ontario. Enter name Shute then next page enter first name John. The one aged 54 is the one. Click on page number to see family. Then click on "Split view" to see original.

Actually I can't see them on the 1901 census, must be mistranscribed.

Choccy,

Can you possibly see any additional information on the daughter of John and Jane or Jennie born in 1892, I have her recorded as Elba Honniborne Shute who married a Howard Stewart. My interest lies in her middle name of Honniborne which was carried through many generations of her mothers family.

Thanks Choccy,
That is brilliant and more than I could have expected. My GR message was inspired by finding the grave of John and Jane/Jennie Shute on the "Find a Grave" website last night and your additional information has been very welcomed in completing the picture.

Many thanks

Many thanks Choccy,

Does the 1901 census happen to provide the date of birth of the husband John by any chance?, he is believed to have been born in abt 1858 in Usbourne Township, Huron, Ontario ?.
