I'm having some trouble trying to find the mother of an ancestor of mine Joseph Claydon. The trouble arises from the fact it looks like he was illegitimate. On the 1911 census he is found living in Warwick with his wife and children, giving his date of birth as 1872 from Welford on Avon in Gloucester. On the IGI there is a record of his christening in Welford, the only name given being that of his mother, Harriet Claydon. On the 1881 census he is living with his aunt and uncle John and Ester Climber in Warwick (looks likely Ester was his aunt by blood as her birthplace is listed as Welford). I havent yet looked for him on the 1891 + 1901 censuses. However, I cannot find anything on Harriet Claydon. Without a year of birth this is rather difficult. I have tried looking on the BMDs but there is no entry for Joseph's birth in the right area/year so I cannot get a birth certificate. I am not sure as to whether Harriet died between 1871-1881 and so left her kid with his aunt and uncle or if she dumped it upon them and left. I have tried looking for Harriet Claydon's in the Gloucestershire area on the 1871 census but without a date it's hard to narrow one down. Anyone had a similar problem who could give me some advice as to how to proceed? Thanks |

There is a Harriet E Clayton in Cheltenham in the 1871 census, the only claydon/phonetic sounding surname there is, actually, but have run out of credits to check her out, might try freecen |

That's the lady. Thank you for the look up. Not sure if it's the Harriet I'm looking for though, although it still could be. Not having a date of birth for Harriet is really hamstringing my search! |

Have you looked for John and Ester's marriage to see what Ester's maiden name was? Could she have been Harriett's sister? |

Marie, I was thinking that and just looking on FreeBMD and IGI when I saw your recent message! Unfortunately, I can't seem to find any mention at all of any of those parties. Was hoping to find Ester's maiden name and then see what Sarah's maiden name was, as it seems more likely that Ester would be a great aunt to Joseph as on the 1881 census she is born in 1826, Welford, her husband John Climber 1828, St. Nicholas Warwick |

Sorry, I have been a massive idiot! Have no idea why I didn't do this sooner and search for the birth of a Harriet Claydon. Well, didn't I just find one harriet Claydon born in Welford in 1839! |

This is all coming together now, as Harriet's parentage on the IGI is listed as a James Claydon and a Martha - this must be Martha Grimmit |
