To be honest I cannot even remember why i thought their marriage is in marsh chapel, maybe it was just because their first child was born there, who knows. Will get cert when i get back from hols

Again another reason to get the cert. The death rate was high back then and she could have had children that died or were living with their grandparents ect or married a mariner who was lost at sea as was the norm.

Without proof what her maiden name or her fathers name and poss occupation you do not know if you are tracing the right person

no i haven't but she had no other children going into this marriage so that makes it less likely. I have emailed St mary's, marsh chapel where they got married to see if they hold records still

jax

jax Report 15 Aug 2011 00:13

Very true...there were lots of reasons why they lied.

The Mariners daughter may not be her but until you get the cert you will not know.

She was 25 when she married so no permission was needed, have you got any birth certs for any of her children saying her maiden name was Atkinson? because 25-28 is quite old for a first marriage

Gillian Report 15 Aug 2011 00:03

sometimes they lied about their age if the husband was younger too, other times they just didn't know how old they were, as they would read 7 write half the time

Gillian

Gillian Report 15 Aug 2011 00:02

Right.

I just don't know which one she is. The captains daughter sounds good to me, i'd like to have a sea captain in the family. He could just be the captain of a small fishing boat for all i know!

It's one i will have to get the marriage cert for in the future. She could have got pregnant and ran off, as married Marsh Chapel lincoln, and not in Grimsby, so they could have eloped as Mum probably wouldn't approve

Working on a ship/fishing boat was no different from working on the land.

You say she may have lied about her age to work?? they were working by at least the age of 12 then anyway

Gillian Report 14 Aug 2011 23:36

It probably would be her if it was dec'd mariner, other one looks more like they come from working on the land, if this James atkison is an uncle, but it's all guess work.

she is the only one on my family I cannot get back to the parents on out of both sides, so i think i will just have to get the cert sometime

jax

jax Report 14 Aug 2011 23:31

If says her father is a dec'd Mariner it may help...but she is living in a area where there would be a high number of men in that line of work

the marriage cert my not be any help, as we don't know deceased mariners name either.

I have got some other problems to sort out if anyone is interested I'll put them on. They are my friends tree

jax

jax Report 14 Aug 2011 23:13

Marriage cert might be the way to go then then you will know who she names as her father if any.

A lot of our ancestors were pregnant when they got married it seems which does'nt really matter from which background they came from. A mariner is only a seaman unless he was a master mariner

I'm thinking this James atkinson might be her uncle or fathers cousin or some relation, so i might be able to try and work it out from that, but it's a bit hard going with it being a bit too far back

Gillian

Gillian Report 14 Aug 2011 23:10

didn't know her date of death, thanks, think i had her possibly isiting friends on the 1891 census, cannot remember who now

Gillian

Gillian Report 14 Aug 2011 23:08

Yes that's the one when she was a servant. I think she might have lied about her age to work. I don't think it's the mariners daughter, but I might be wrong. She only married a lowly person, in fact the son of a man whom was transported to Tasmania for larceny. I cannot see she would have moved in the same circles. However a servant is more likely. She was pregnant when she got married too. I am not saying it's definetely the servant girl, but she is born cleethorpes, whereas the other is great grimsby, and when she lived with rodger it says cleethorpes
