Nickki,

When going over the info given, please bear in mind that Mile End Old Town and Stepney merge into one another. So the 1871 and 1861 censuses posted here just might be the right ones. Showing Joseph Parkin b.c.1952 with his mother and siblings.

When someone gets married, then as now, the registrar is present. Therefore it wouldn't matter if the couple were illiterate or not. The registrar would fill in the certificate and the marriage would automatically be registered.

Well i'm going to go off & research the info that has been given & see if i can come up with anything.

Thank you all for taking the time to help... enjoy your evening :)

I thought that was the case, and as both Joseph & Annie appear to illiterate as in the sign with a 'X' I feel that this might well be the case. I do have Ann's birth Certificate... Ann Julia Bassett born 8.09.1856 at 14 Tait Street, father Frederick George Bassett a Master Shoemaker & mother Ann Elizabeth formerly Warwick.

If it is the case that they never married, where can i go from here to try and confirm the birth of Joseph?

Hi, if you want to check our Ancstory without suscribing then try your local library, lots of them have free access to Ancestory providing you are a member of the library, which is free.

good hunting. M.

Registration wasn't compulsory until 1875 and even then not everyone bothered so it might be that their marriage was never registered.

A possible birth is Joseph Parkin Dec quarter of 1852 in Stepney

The info i have on ancestors back to Joseph born 1878 is correct, as i have managed to cross reference it all going back. But i hit this brick wall more that 3 years ago & gave up as i just didnt seem to be able to make any headway on it. But i really would like to go back... it is this particular line of my family that got me started on my tree to begin with...

A bit of a long shot but what might the possibilities of this being Jospeh & Annie?? Would it be uncommon for children to be born out of wedlock?? And for parents to use different names?

Marriages Sep 1886

I have the birth certificate of Joseph Frederick Parkin, born 21.02.1878, 44 Tait Street.
Father Joseph Parkin a Cooper, Mother Ann Parkin formally Bassett of 44 Tait Street.

I have the Marriage Certificate of Joseph Frederick Parkin & Alice Gingell on 24.02.1901. Joseph lived at 8 Baker Street & Alice at 5 Nelson Street. Jospeh's father is stated as Joseph Parkin, a Cooper & Alice's as John Gingell Deceased.

I also have the Death Cert of Joseph Parkins (the 'S' appears & disappears) 27.01.1902, male 52 years of age, Coopers Labourer, informant Annie Julia Parkins widow of deceased. 8 Spencer Street.

I also have information on most of the Siblings now, but i really would like to try & find the marriage of Joseph & Annie in order to progress backwards.

Many thanks for help so far :)

Eileen

I have found that birth record before, but I'm not sure how it can help me? Would a marriage record give me any clues? Sadly i don't subscribe to Ancestry & can't afford to at the moment, so i cannot view details on there either.

Thank you for taking the time to give me the information though :)
