Thanks everyone, really appreciate your help. will follow this lead.

So Mary Caveney should be listed as mother-in-law as she is obviously Agnes G.'s mother.
Albert and Ada are listed as boarders but if you go back to the 1881 census it looks like Henry and Albert are brothers, so likely that Ada is a sister?
In 1881 Henry, 14, and Albert, 7, both born Birmingham are sons of Henry, 36, born Leicester and Mary, 36, born Birmingham.

Very good, Patchem!
I don't feel so bad not being able to find Ada Newton when she was transcribed Aado Kenton!

I cannot find them in 1891 either.
On the 1901 census I have just found that Henry is a Jewellers Gold Cutter (to help in identification), and they were living at 26 Tower Road.
There is a big gap in ages of children, so wondered about her children and second marriages, but the 1887 marriage found looks good.
So back to looking for a jeweller.

MargaretM Report 30 Apr 2011 23:55

This is curious! Why can't I find any of these people on the 1891 census?

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 30 Apr 2011 23:36

I agree, Elaine, the name Horace and Ethel are not that common and they're in both families.

Elaine

Elaine Report 30 Apr 2011 22:07

Hi Patchem

Ada's children were
Gladys Ada
Elizabeth
Arthur
Ethel
Horace
Sylvia
Bernard
Ronald

Looks like a couple of the names match to the census info Jonesey listed, so may be onto something.

What were the names of Ada's children (to see if family names used)?

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 30 Apr 2011 21:37

On that 1901 census that Jonesey posted Ada is a sister of Henry Newton so if we could find Henry's parents we'd find Ada's. Having said that I can't even find a marriage of Henry Newton & Grace.

Elaine

Elaine Report 30 Apr 2011 20:48

Thank you Jonesey. Not sure how I can confirm this as have no idea of her parents names.

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 30 Apr 2011 20:45

This could be Ada's birth:

Newton Ada Louise W. Bromwich 6b 767

Parts of what became Birmingham (E.G. Handsworth) were once within the West Bromwich registration district.

I have a copy of the original document and the name could be Ada or Ida. Her eldest daughter was called Gladys Ada and my father's birth certificate states that her name was Ada.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 30 Apr 2011 20:31

But the 1911 census that was posted gives her name as Ida not Ada.

Elaine

Elaine Report 30 Apr 2011 20:16

Thanks all
I have found them on the 1911 census and that states that they have been married for 9 years. They have 2 children Gladys born 1908 and Elizabeth born 1910 and are living with his mother. Both listed as being born in Birmingham.
Arthur was born in 1882 and Ada around 1885.
I have thought that maybe they didn't get married, even though they ended up having 8 children.

Curiously there's a marriage of Ada Louise Newton to a possible Arthur Thomas Giddings or a Benjamin Watson in 1900:
