My great-grandfather never used his first name, including when he married, so it doesn't signify anything.
Have you used the MidlandsHistoricaldata site? You can search electoral register for Birmingham by name as well as address. You have to pay but I understand it's a very small amount so might be worth a look.

Check to see whether Edith died between 1939 and 1945

The man could actually record whatever name he chose on the ER....as long as he wasn't intending to defraud or deceive...........

As for the birth cert...perhaps he (or his wife) didn't like the name Elijah. Who registered the birth?

When you filled in the electoral register did you have to provide any evidence of who you were?
No.
Therefore people can change what information they provide.

Is it possible for a person to change there name on the electoral register from one register to the next?
Alfred Elijah Leonard Hill was resident, and therefore of voting age, at 223 Camden Street in Birmingham in 1930, and again this time with wife Edith in 1935 & 1939. However come 1945 there is one person registered there simple by the name of Leonard Hill. I ask this because on the birth certificate of a daughter from 1934 the fathers name appears as Alfred Leonard, thus dropping the Elijah for some reason.
Could the 1945 Leonard Hill be same one as in earlier years? Can the names change or would this have to be a different person?

Regards

Rhys
