Oh Heck!!!!!!!! What a sad ending to his life.

Tenerife Sun

Tenerife Sun Report 23 Feb 2011 15:56

Just for interest ......

Before John left his wife and 8 children he owned 2 printing works in Fleet street and 3 houses in other parts of London. Somehow he managed to go bankrupt at about the same time as he was being sited in Henriettas divorce. This I guess was the reason for a new start in America.

Sadly I think the following, from the New York Times, was his death.

I am pleased to say our family way of life has improved quite a lot over the years.

This is too much of a coincidence and applies to the Eden Muse in Manhattan 1884

''Intrigued, 60-year old lithographer John Kirkland Gardner who lived on 21st Street paused to read the Sitting Bull advertisements outside the Eden Musee. A gust of wind caused one of the flags on the building to snap into one of the 300-pound stone urns on the balustrade above, dislodging it. The urn crashed squarely on the head of Gardner who was killed instantly.''

At least he had led a full and colourful life

Hi Dee

Kirkland turns up as a middle name several time in my tree but as yet not as a surname. I expected it to me someones maiden name but not so far.

Thanks for all your help.

Hi Wendy,

I'm sorry I really don't know, hopefully someone will point you in the right direction though.

John's middle name is an interest to me as it was my maiden name, my ancestors were middle England based however I realise that way back they would have originated from Scotland.........I'm back to 1710 and no Scottish roots turned up yet.

If baby Horace died at sea on the way from England to America does anyone know where the death would be registered?

Dee's naturisation records are for the right guy. Therefore poor Ada died 6 days after arriving in America, perhaps she became ill during the crossing. Where where was baby Horace??? I wonder if he also became ill and died too

Hi ***alviegal*** ,

Still can't see John entering the USA, yours was definately the closest match.

Wendy I don't see anything for Horace after the 1871 census.

Tenerife Sun Report 23 Feb 2011 14:56

Dee thanks again, I guess lied about his age as Lottie was so much younger than him

I wish I could find something on Horace as he would only have only been about 18 months. Ada went to live with her maternal grandmother but Horace has disappeared have checked english census's, deaths 1911 etc

Thank you Dee that fits except birth place says England not Scotland.

John married Lottie Morehouse on 19/06/1873 it was stated as a second marriage for both of them. If this true he never married Henrietta as his. first marriage was to my great grandmother in London

Sorry for any delays in replying but I am going backwards and forwards to Ancestry who in an attempt to upgrade me have cancelled me and nothing more so far.

HI all,

I'm having trouble with upgrading to Ancestry World Wide which is why I am asking for help.

Lynn this isn't the right one I have tracked him back.

The 1871 census is the correct one but John was born in 1815 Henrietta was born in 1843 Fulham registered Kensington, Ada was registered Lambeth and Horace in Islington

Thank you all for your help
